Nothing Like the Gentle Touch of a Sea Breeze

Last year, Bettie Page Clothing released the breathtaking Sea Breeze Dress for their 2012 Spring/Summer collection. I knew instantly it would find a home in my closet as the beautiful aqua blue was shouting buy me, buy me! Knowing I had more than enough dresses to wear for the summer, I waited for the end of season sales and snagged it for a steal of a deal at JBR Clothing.

Available in sizes XS to 4X – MSRP $126 USD.

In my experience with Bettie Page, I find their sizing to be a bit inconsistent as they do not offer individual item specific size charts. Knowing the Sea Breeze was made from a 4-way stretch material, it was safe to say a Medium would be the way to go. With my measurements 36-29-41, the sizing was spot on and the fit was perfect. The crisp white trim, buttons and belt are a fabulous accent to the aqua blue; a truly beautiful vintage color combination. The material is not only stretchy but has substantial weight and thickness as well. One of the greatest features I must mention…POCKETS!!! The wide white straps allow you to wear your favorite bras while not sacrificing comfort and support. At 5 feet 4 inches tall, the lovely swing skirt falls a couple inches below the knee.

The Sea Breeze is one of the most comfortable dresses and suitable for various body types. I absolutely adore the fabulous quality and feel of the fabric, perfect to keep you cool on those warm summer days. The contrasting white belt defines your waist while the swing skirt drapes flowingly away from your hips. You can skip the shapewear and wear the Sea Breeze with confidence.

This little number is perfect for the office or afternoon party when paired with a white cardigan and ballet flats. Kick it up a notch with a pair of pearls, high heel Mary-Janes and short white gloves for a timeless ensemble . The Sea Breeze has a classic vintage design sure to appeal to those seeking a true 1950′s look.

I have always been a sucker vintage reproduction designs that truly capture the classic elements of the era. The Bettie Page Sea Breeze is definitely a winner in those regards and a fabulous go to dress when you’re short on time but don’t want to sacrifice style.

Fifties Timeless Elegance

There’s nothing I am more drawn to then the true timeless elegance of the fashion era from the fifties. Many vintage repro designers add a modern twist to their designs but I am a sucker for the genuine untouched elements from the decade we all know and love. From the moment I laid eyes on the Bettie Page Beverly Dress, it was love at first sight! Its simple sophistication was breathtaking. I was thrilled to see JBR Clothing was stocking this number.

Available in sizes XXS to 4X – MSRP $134USD

One of the things I appreciate most when shopping at JBR Clothing is Rachel’s amazing guidance on sizing…she has yet to steer me wrong! Personally I find Bettie Page sizing to be different with each design and would love to see specific size charts to make online shopping easier. Based on Rachel’s feedback, I opted to order the Beverly in size Medium which fits wonderfully (Measurements 36-29-41). Made from a very unique textured pale green 4-way stretch fabric, with flecks of blue, orange and pink woven in. The Beverly is fully lined with a beautiful quality satin, it feels like silk on your skin. A notable feature is the cute bow belt supplied with the Beverly in brown, also available to buy separately in a variety of additional colors. The belt seems to run quite large, I will need to trim the excess as it wraps around too far.

The Beverly is designed with modesty in mind with a high rounded collar, short sleeves and knee length hemline. The thickness of the woven material and lined interior truly creates the illusion of a flawless silhouette. A word of caution, be extra careful when closing the back zipper as the texture of the fabric tends to easily get snagged and will cause thread pulls. The Beverly fit perfectly off the rack and required absolutely no alterations. I find ladies with a more hourglass shape regardless of size will be drawn to its simplistic look. Thankfully the bow belt adds a little pop of color to the overall design.

Perfect for the office or an afternoon with the ladies, the Beverly is the epitome of fifties fashion. Pair it with your favorites red pumps to spice up your look. Add a set of vintage pearls to enhance the Jackie O’ vibe to the design. Simplicity is the best look with the Beverly…less is more!

I truly hope to see more genuine fifties inspired designs coming from Bettie Page in future collections…modernizing tends to lose so much of what we love most from those times. Sadly I cannot wear true vintage dresses as the sizing is much too small in the waist. Thankfully we are blessed with several fabulous Vintage Inspired Designers that help keep the era alive!

Dressed To Impress At The Office

These days, women want to make a statement at the office without revealing too much. The gracious Joan Holloway-Harris on Mad Men is the perfect inspiration for this classic elegance; a modest neckline with a curve hugging silhouette falling just below the knee. Sex appeal can be defined in more ways than showing excess flesh. During my trip to Vegas this past March, I had the chance to visit the Bettie Page stores and fell head over heels with the Rita Dress as soon as I walked out of the fitting room. Although I did not buy it at the time, my friends at JBR Clothing were happy to custom order one in.

Available in sizes XS to 4X – MSRP $102USD.

Initially I tried the Large Rita at the Bettie Page store but quickly found there was enough stretch in the bengaline material to try sizing down. The Medium fit perfectly and sat well on my shoulders. The Rita features a wide collar design; one that does not overwhelm ladies like myself with narrow shoulders. The curve hugging pencil skirt accentuates all the right places and comes with a thin black belt. At 5 ft 4 inches, the Rita falls a couple inches below the knee…no hemming required.

What I love most about the Rita is the gorgeous turquoise color. A true representation of the era, there is nothing more classic than the silhouette it creates. Keep in mind, the bengaline is not known to conceal trouble areas so I highly recommend pairing it with your favorite shapewear. In the photos I’m wearing the Rago 1294 girdle but as you can see, it slightly shows through. Some seamless shapewear like Spanx or Body Wrap would be a better solution in this case.

The Rita can be worn to the office, or to any classy affair you may attend. Pair it with your favorite round toe pumps and add an extra touch with contrasting gloves. Simple earrings or a short pearl necklace will be a nice accent as well.

Bettie Page has recently released more classic 50′s office looks this season and I am very excited to try them as well. Check out the Beverly and Iced Coffee dress at JBR Clothing…both are on my must have list.

Defy The Illusion

Our trip to the Viva Rockabilly Weekender was full of exciting new adventures. One of which I was uber excited for was visiting the Bettie Page Clothing stores. Why? As long as I have been passionate about this lifestyle, I have ALWAYS purchased everything online! There are absolutely no boutiques that cater to the pin up/rockabilly style anywhere close to where I live, definitely very depressing. Needless to say, I felt like a kid in a candy store walking into Bettie Page. Knowing all the styles and names was quite funny to my fiancee, but to me…this was a normal. We visited both Las Vegas locations of course and was thrilled to scoop up the Illusion Dress on the sale rack for $65…but it gets even better, there was another 25% off at the register!!!

Although the Illusion Dress is now discontinued, you can snag the new Alika Dress either in wiggle or circle skirt in a variety of colors. Available in S to 4X – MSRP $134-140USD.

When it comes to sizing in Bettie Page, I am all over the place depending on the style and fabric. It came as a total surprise the Medium fit perfectly in the Illusion Dress since it is not made from a very stretchy material (polyester/rayon mix) like bengaline. According to their size charts, I should be a Large based on my waist 29 and hips 41. Let’s just say I am so happy a certain someone told me to give it a try, I was convinced it would be too small. The length was perfect, no need to hem although I am only 5ft 4 inches. I would like to add that no alterations of any kind where required, it fit fabulously right off the rack.

The lovely netting around the nape of the neck is super elegant and not scratchy but comes with one small downfall…bra selection. You will ruin the classic look with a dark bra strap of any kind, it calls for a strapless or clear straps without a doubt. The Illusion Dress features capped sleeves with plenty of arm room and a contrasting belt. Since this particular one was on clearance and missing the belt, the Bettie Page clerk grabbed a lovely grey one from their back room to ensure I was not missing a complete outfit. Kudos to the staff at the Planet Hollywood location, they were so friendly and beyond helpful.

When it comes to accessories, I suggest to keep it very simple. The netting gives it a unique look and does not require much more. Pair this with your favorite Mary-Jane heels and vintage stud earrings. That’s it, you’re done! As for shapewear, you can get away with something with light support since the material is very forgiving. In these photos, I opted not to wear any shapewear at all so you could see how great it looks even without.

The best part of the whole shopping experience was the staff at the Planet Hollywood location, they truly care about their customers and offer them top notch service. I could have stayed there the entire day…fabulous customer service goes a long way these days! If you are not able to visit their stores…I highly recommend their online store as well. Their International shipping rates are very inexpensive (they offer free shipping promos often as well) and normally takes under 2 weeks to arrive to Canada. If you really love the Illusion Dress, search the internet as there are quite a few boutiques clearing them out!
