Kat Von D’s One Of A Kind Beauty Collection

There is no secret in the fact that I’ve been a HUGE Kat Von D fan over the years, her beauty and talent is truly one of a kind. When Kat released her first book, I traveled to Toronto and waited in line for over three hours just to have the chance to meet her and get my book autographed. The Sephora staff all gush on how down-to-earth she is and truly appreciates her fans which was very evident when I met her as well. Needless to say, when her makeup line was released I had to try it…not knowing I would fall in love all over again. The quality is hands down one of the best when it comes to the luscious, highly pigmented and long lasting products.

Now it’s time to share the fabulous products in my growing Kat Von D collection.

True Romance Eyeshadow Palette in Ludwig

The very first item I purchased immediately following the release of Kat’s cosmetic line was the True Romance Eyeshadow Palette in Ludwig (named after her late hairless cat). This palette is full of wonderful neutral staples with perfect compliments to create a beautiful smokey eye in natural tones. My favorite colors are Orbi and Dimebag, both stunning shades of shimmery green. The palette comes in a fabulous case adorned with Kat’s artwork.

High Voltage Eye Primer in skin

The problem I have always struggled with was trying to achieve the true color of the eyeshadow I was applying. Other eye primers did not seem to provide the proper base and decided to try the Kat Von D High Voltage Eye Primer in skin. Immediately I could see the primer was thicker and concealed amazingly compared to other brands. It does not crease or cake even after hours of wear. It has become my go-to eye primer and highly recommend it to everyone.

Triple Threat Tattoo Liners

The Kat Von D Triple Threat Tattoo Liners are the holy grail for vintage pin up lovers! Before I owned the trio, there was absolutely no way I could achieve a perfect cat-eye being so unskilled when it comes to makeup application. The set comes with three different style eye liner tips; Saint – skinny tip, Poetica – bold chiseled tip, Sinner – medium tip. All three are waterproof and more importantly, quick-drying. What I love most is the fact they are super easy to use with the unique felt tip applicator and go on so smoothly. They will last you all day and never crease or crack. The trio set is a MUST HAVE for all!

P.S. The liner that gets used the most is definitely Sinner.

Everlasting Love Liquid Lipstick in Outlaw

The most recent addition to my collection is the Kat Von D Everlasting Love Liquid Lipstick in Outlaw. This shade is the most true pin up red I have ever found in a lip stain. It goes on amazingly smooth and dries super quick so you won’t have to worry about transfer onto your teeth or clothes. In my experience, it does not dry out your lips like most stains and last for hours. The only time I require a touch up is after eating. Again, another MUST HAVE for pin up girls!

Lock-It Tattoo Foundation

Kat Von D recently released the Lock-It Tattoo Foundation which is said to be one of the best on the market by the staff at Sephora. Hopefully I will get to try her foundation in the future and report back; once my Dior foundation is empty.

Whether you are a makeup newbie like myself or a hardcore junkie, the Kat Von D line is highly recommended for everyone. Make sure to check out your local Sephora and sample them for yourself…you won’t be disappointed!

A love affair with Besame… by Cara Hill

A couple of months ago, a friend of mine invited me to a Vintage Glamour party at her place: a company in Wellington, The Vanity Case (www.thevanitycase.co.nz), does them – they’re like tupperware parties but with Besame makeup instead of stupid plastic containers (actually, Tupperware is pretty cool too, just not as good as makeup). Claire, owner of The Vanity Case, will come to your house – where you’ve assembled a group of makeup-loving ladies – and demonstrate retro makeup and hair styles, as well as sell the Besame product range and the Lauren Rennells books to those who want to buy them.

It sounded like so much fun, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend my friend’s party. Not to be left out, however, I decided to hold my own. I had heard about the Besame range through Pinup Girl Clothing and was eager to try it out. I invited a bunch of ladies, bought lots of nibbles and champagne and looked forward to a great evening. I wasn’t disappointed. How can you not have fun playing with makeup and hair, laughing and drinking with a bunch of friends?

The lovely ladies at the Vintage Glamour Party

But the highlight of the evening was discovering Besame, a makeup company that is an ode to the colours, styles and glamour of the 30s and 40s. I was Claire’s makeup model, and the quality of the makeup was noticeable the second she put it on my skin. She started with the Cashmere Pressed Powder – which comes in a beautiful Deco-style compact, and my slightly pink and blotchy bare face became clear and matte in seconds. She put it on half of my face to start with to show the contrast between the before and after, and the rest of the girls actually ‘ooohed’ and ‘ahhhhed’ at the difference.

I won’t go through the whole process, but she used a number of the products on me and all of them were impressive – I wanted to purchase the lot! But I had to be realistic, so I settled for my favourites:

As I mentioned above, the Cashmere Pressed Powder was an instant hit. It made such a drastic change in my skin tone, provided great coverage and took the shininess away for the whole night – despite going out and sweating it up in a dance club after the party. No powder has done that for me before; my face is usually a shining beacon of light within an hour of going out on the town, but here it stayed matte all night. Best purchase ever. I also love that it takes the place of foundation and is so light on the skin; I am not a fan of heavy foundation at all – I don’t like to feel my makeup – so this is great for me. An added bonus, the compact is gorgeous and it comes in a little red velvet bag. But the best part is the fact that you can buy refills of the powder, so you only ever have to buy the compact once.

I also bought the 1930s mascara. It too comes in the lovely gold Besame packaging, so is very pretty to look at (an important but often neglected feature of makeup!). The mascara didn’t blow me away as much as the powder (although, the powder is my new favourite thing in life, so it is kind of hard to top!), but it is still a quality product. It is made from a bunch of natural ingredients that are good for your lashes and eyes and smells divine. It is rather subtle, but it is perfect to layer and never clumps. It also doesn’t smear or goop, but still comes off easily with a gentle eye makeup remover. Did I mention the smell? It is lovely, I have to sniff it before putting it on every morning.

Finally, I chose a lipstick. I already had lovely red and pink colours that I loved (MAC’s Russian Red and Insanely It, respectively), so I decided to go for an orangey colour. Besame’s Carmine fit the bill – it is a beautiful orangey red, not too orange and not too red. I wasn’t sure how it would look on me, but I loved it on. Besame lipsticks are quite matte, but never feel too dry. They have beautiful colour and are apparently quite faithful recreations of vintage lipstick colours. In fact, I was lucky enough to win another Besame lipstick at Dr Sketchy (The Vanity Case is one of the sponsors of Dr Sketchy, hence the lovely lipstick in the prize goody bag!) – Red Hot Red, which is a recreation of Marilyn Monroe’s favourite shade of red. I hadn’t tried it on at the Vintage Glamour party, so devoted to Russian Red as I was, but I was blown away when I finally did. It is such a gorgeous colour – there is no doubt as to why it was Marilyn’s favourite. In fact, don’t tell anyone, but it has surpassed Russian Red as my favourite red lipstick. Besame lipsticks are also packaged in lovely gold containers and come in little red velvet bags – so lush.

All in all, I am supremely happy with Besame and will continue to use the products – in fact, you’ll have to pull my powder compact from my cold, dead hands in order to get me to stop using it! Needless to say, I recommend this range wholeheartedly, not only to those who have a love of all things vintage and vintage-inspired, but also to those who are just looking for quality makeup products. Besame fits the bill on both counts.

Not the best photo, but this shows the loveliness that is Red Hot Red and the great coverage and matteness of the powder (other than cropping it and fixing the red eye, nothing has been done to this photo).

In the US, Europe and Asia, Besame can be purchased at select retailers and from their website: www.besamecosmetics.com.

In New Zealand, The Vanity Case is the sole distributor of Besame – I think Claire supplies it to certain retailers, but you can also buy it directly from her website with free shipping: www.thevanitycase.co.nz. I would also highly recommend having a Vintage Glamour Party if you can; they are so much fun and Claire really knows her stuff, as well as being a truly a lovely person.

Viva Shopping Madness!

As you all can guess, I could not pass up the opportunity of shopping like a mad women while at Viva in Las Vegas. To be completely honest, despite all the goodies I am going to share with you…I was rather disappointed with the overall selection at the event. The majority of the indoor vendors where true vintage items, memorabilia, or just uninspiring. The outdoor car show on Saturday proved to be more fruitful in variety and deals.

The first Viva purchases was at the Daddy O’s/Stop Staring booth. I was elated to meet the face behind the brand, Alicia Estrada! She is a true sweetheart and also very excited to hear about the Pin Up Persuasion blog. There was no way I could walk out empty handed from there, I purchased these two dresses.

Lux De Ville did not have a vendor booth set up but their purses where available at many kiosks. I scooped up the Sin City Kiss Lock purse for 20% at the Sourpuss kiosk. During the weekend, LDV also had their golden ticket giveaway. If you were spotted with one of their purses, they would give you a golden ticket to receive a special gift. We scored a Starlite wallet in our choice of color…I went with the green sparkle.

These unique purses by Victory Jane USA are super cute! Each one has a custom pinstripe hand painted for a one of a kind element. This green was too gorgeous to pass up, it retails for $70.

Jewelry was one of the hot items I was searching for. The entire weekend I kept going back to see a classic vintage pearl necklace, debating if I should purchase it or not. On the last day, the vendor was marking everything down so I took a chance by offering $20 for the $39 necklace. To my surprise, they sold it to me for $22…score! The little poodle brooch is also vintage. I loved this little birdie & Angelina Wrona artwork by Classic Hardware.

It was a flower heaven at Viva! The little tropical frangipanis are from the hotel gift shop, I had to have one in every color since they were only $3! Another popular hair accessory was the Snood; a mesh hair wrap. We will see how that works in the near future, need to experiment with it first.

My last purchase at the weekend vendors was a pair of Tres Noir Bombshell sunglasses in black and white. Not in a million years did I see myself paying so much for sunglasses but these are so worth every penny. They retail for about $92 but managed to get them for $85.

While exploring the Las Vegas strip, we ventured into the Forum Boutiques where I tried on my first pair of Louboutin shoes! It was love at first sight of those stunning red soles. No I did not buy a pair but my fiancee promised he would buy them next year. A girl can only hope.

Next stop was Bettie Page Clothing at the Forum shops. I tried on a few dresses and noted which ones I plan on purchasing in the coming months. The one deal that was impossible to turn down was the Illusion Dress on clearance for only $50. It fits like a dream.

Last but not least, Sephora! I most definitely had to take advantage of the cheaper US prices and lower sales tax. After falling in love with the look of liquid eyeliner it was time to try different brands to see what works best. A friend recommended the Kat Von D three piece eyeliner set, so I decided to give it a whirl. During my last makeup lesson, they used the Kat Von D eye concealer as well along with the Dior heated eyelash curler so I grabbed those as well.

Even with limited selection, overall I purchased a bunch of fabulous items at Viva. I am excited to order a couple new Bettie Page dresses very soon and will definitely let you know how things work out in upcoming reviews. Time to start practicing that perfect retro eyeliner look!

Makeup Lesson #2 at Sephora

Before the holidays I had stopped at my local Sephora store to grab a couple beauty basics ie: eyelash curler and some brushes. Unfortunately the experience was very negative due to the lack of service and left empty handed with a sour impression of Sephora. I sent in a letter about the situation in order for them to be aware of what occurred and in hopes this does not happen to others. Personally I have worked in the retail industry all my life and feel good service is a must no matter where you go. Sadly, there was no response from Sephora and just left it at that.

Recently a friend mentioned she had an issue with Sephora and received a prompt resolution via their Facebook page. I decided to mention the situation once again and received a private message almost immediately. Long story short, the local Sephora invited me back to their store to attend free makeup application and offered a goodie bag of samples. I cordially obliged as I wanted to give them a second chance to make things right. They paired me with a fellow Pinup/Retro admirer which was pretty awesome.

As I walked into the store I was immediately greeted by Jackie, the employee I had been dealing with via email. She introduced me to the makeup artist Ashley whom was going to teach the makeup session. Of course I had to bring my retro makeup book as reference material for the look I wanted to achieve. Ashley knew exactly what this look entailed and went about the store to find products she was going to use.

Success!

When she began, the first thing she mentioned was to start out with the eyes and do your primer and foundation last. This way if you mess up, you can just wipe it off and restart without affecting your base. It makes sense right? We started with a concealer (Kat Von D eye primer) on the eyes since I have very fair skin and the veins in my lids are pretty noticeable. Next step was to apply a base of light all over shadow, worked up to just below the brow. Slowly she built up the shadows in the crease, utilizing several neutral colors (Too Faced Naked Eye Pallet), from lightest to darkest gradually.

Then we were onto the black eyeliner, something that scares me to death since you must achieve a solid clean line to have the perfect effect. Being a beginner, Ashley recommended to use the gel eye liner (Stila smudge pot – black) with an angled brush. Using short even brush strokes, she created a flawless line. Drawing in the wing was a bit tricky, but not impossible. Just have some q-tips handy with eye makeup remover to quick corrections. She filled in any areas with black eye shadow to ensure a flawless finish.

Stila Smudge Pot Eyeliner - Black

Thankfully I am very fortunate to have a natural arch to my brow and do not require much tweaking in this area. She just lightly filled them in with a smudge-proof brow powder (Anastasia Duo II – ash blonde) using an angled brow brush. From there she curled my lashes using a heated eyelash curler to avoid any damage with the traditional clamp style (very bad for the health of your lashes). Since I am still very new to all of this, Ashley recommended to try half lashes rather than the full ones which are much trickier. She applied the first one and I did the second. It was not perfect but with the proper lighting and some tweezers, it would be pretty easy honestly. The eyes were now complete!

Anastasia Brow Powder - Ash Blonde

As a base, she applied an oil free primer (Smashbox photo finish) and then a light coat of all over foundation (Diorskin nude – light beige). Surprisingly she applied a concealer under the eyes AFTER the foundation. Why? To save on product since the foundation would just smudge the concealer around. Who knew!

DiorNude Concealer - Light Beige

Lightly apply a bronzer (Too Faced – Chocolate soleil) around the edge of your face just to make it pop. Afterwards, select a nice pink blush to add on the apples of your cheeks. Finish off with a red liner and lipstick of your choice, my personal favorite is Mac Russian red.

After removing the makeup later that evening, I found that my forehead was a bit irritated from either the primer or the foundation or my new face cream. It could simply be because my skin is not used to these types of products or need to find an alternate brand that does not cause an irritation. I am going to test out each one separately to see what happens and go from there. Thankfully Sephora has a great exchange/return policy in these cases.

The Final Look

I was blown away at the final look and felt pretty confident I can accomplish this on my own with a little practice. For the first time ever, I spent over $200 on beauty products and do not regret it one bit! Next purchase will be a good set of brushes, stay tuned!
