Courtesans were known as the mistresses of the Royal Courts, not your average prostitute of the 21st Century. They were expected to be well dressed and educated in order to take part in the upper class world of their benefactors. This may be a thing of the past but they definitely influence us still today when it comes to fashion. Micheline Pitt designed the Deadly Dames Fall 2012 Collection with a strong presence from the Victorian Era as her inspiration. I was completely smitten with the Courtesan Swing dress in Gingham from the day Pinup Girl Clothing released sneak peak photos of what was to come. The torture of waiting several months was excruciating.
Available in size Small to 2X; Gingham & Victorian Rose Print – MSRP $152USD
The day the Courtesan Swing dress hit the site, I was quickly scrambling to place my order but was seriously torn on the sizing. Based on the chart, it was running smaller in the waist than usual but I knew sizing up would mean alterations to the bust area. I wavered back and forth for a couple hours but decided to risk ordering the Medium. The moment of truth came and I almost cried because it was SO tight in the waist but fit perfectly in the bust. Feeling discouraged, I put it aside for a week before trying it again. This time my spirits were high and I was happy with what I saw in the mirror. It took a bit tugging and stretching in order to make some much needed breathing room, but it worked! Note that my waist is 29 inches and the chart says up to 28.5 inches in the Medium so if you are more than an inch larger than the chart, order up…trust me!
The best part of the design is the padded seamed cups which provide some serious support for the bust area with adjustable straps without over the top cleavage I must add. The pink satin ribbon gives a soft feminine touch which compliments the all over gingham print. Made from a high quality cotton with minimal to no stretch and fully lined in stretch charmeuse. The removable wide velvet belt provides the look of a cinched in waist and compliments the black velvet straps. The length is perfect, no need to hem the skirt for the shorter ladies like myself at 5 feet 4 inches.
The Courtesan Swing dress is great to wear to the office paired with low patent pumps and a shrug/bolero. Dress up your look for an evening out with your high heel mary-janes and a bold necklace sure to grab tons attention. A girl can never have enough swing dresses in her closet!
If a fitted look is more of your style, the Courtesan is also available in a wiggle dress. The same great molded cups a la 1950’s bra with a sleek pencil skirt bottom. Take note that some colorways are being discontinued, so do not procrastinate if the Courtesan dress is on your wishlist.
The Courtesans of years past are far from being forgotten, as their influences are still being seen today!
