L’Amour Est Comme Une Rose

This time around, it was Readers Choice on what review was being showcased next. The winner is…the Deadly Dames L’Amour Dress in Victorian Rose from Pinup Girl Clothing. Fortunately I was able to snag this beauty at the last PUG yardsale for only $65, thanks to a wonderful friend that was so kind to shop for me as well. The only difference with the sample vs the ones sold on the site, the sample is missing the bows on the front of the sleeves which doesn’t bother me one bit. The L’Amour was at the top of my wishlist after falling in love with my DD Curves Skirt in Victorian Rose.

Available in sizes XS to 2X in a variety of colors & prints – MSRP $146USD.

Since I already own the DD skirt in the same print, I knew it was necessary to size up to a Large in the L’Amour because there is zero stretch in the fabric. To my surprise, the bust & shoulders fit perfectly and required no alterations even though the chart says it “should” be much too big with my measurements (Bust 36, Waist 29, Hips 42). In my opinion, the DD L’Amour runs small in comparison to the size chart and this should be taken into consideration before ordering your normal size. If you are in between sizes, definitely go by your largest measurement and size up. The L’Amour bust is fully lined and covered with a beautiful gathered chiffon overlay with cap sleeves. The Victorian Rose bottom is also lined and features a modest back slit. The velvet belt accents your natural waist in order to enhance a perfect hourglass silhouette.

The first thing I loved with the L’Amour is how it hugs you in all the right placed and is fabulously constructed. Do not let this wiggle dress fool you, it is so comfortable and accents your best features while concealing those trouble areas; compliments of the fully lined skirt. Rago shapewear will work perfectly; I am wearing the Rago 6201 Long Leg Shaper. The L’Amour compliments ladies in all shapes and sizes, whether you are a XS or 2X. If you prefer more sex appeal with no sleeves, you should try the DD Courtesan Wiggle Dress.

I can definitely see myself wearing the L’Amour to the office as it is not overly revealing and possesses a true classic elegance to the design. This little number is perfect to go from day to evening with no wardrobe change required. Pair it with your favorite black pumps and you’re ready to go! You can also add a soft pink hair flower to compliment the Victorian Rose print.

There’s no hiding the fact that this was definitely a killer bargain for such a fabulous dress! I can say that the retail price point reflects the craftsmanship that went into the design and will be a gem in your closet for years to come. Even more exciting, the L’Amour is going to be released in new colorways very soon!

Swallows, Anchors & Roses – OH MY!

The best part of blogging is having the opportunity to share new finds with my readers. I often stick to the vintage repro brands we all know and love but sometimes I like to gamble on the unknown. Most of us find ourselves on a tight budget when it comes to buying things we want vs our needs. For those of you looking for affordable alternatives, let me introduce Hearts & Roses London. Their designs are priced between $40-$55 and are fabricated in China. With quality questions in mind, I decided to take the plunge with the Flocked Red 50’s Tattoo Print Rockabilly Dress from Rockabilly Pinup UK.

Available Sizes UK8 to UK16 in Red or Black Tattoo Print – MSRP £29.50 ($46USD)

With any new brand, sizing is always a challenge and you must do your homework before buying. After consulting with the H & R London size chart and feedback from Rockabilly Pinup, I opted to go with the UK12(Medium) as my measurements are bust 36, waist 29, hips 42. The Medium is said to fit bust 35/36, waist 27/29, hips 38/39. If you are in-between sizes, I highly recommend to size up as there is little stretch in the fabric. Also, the bust is quite snug on the Medium and I cannot wear any kind bust enhancing undergarments.

The 1950’s dress is made from a beautiful red flocked material featuring traditional rockabilly tattoo print swallows, anchors, stars and roses. It features a sweetheart black trimmed neckline with three smalls bows on the fitted bodice and concealed side zipper. The flared skirt is trimmed with a peak-a-boo black netting to add a little extra volume. This feature is something I will probably remove as I am not too keen on exposed tulle.

When it comes to the overall quality I am very satisfied considering the price point. The fabric is quite thick, perfect for those cooler months and the design is well constructed. I was a bit nervous when ironing the flocked print but it came out beautifully (note: use low heat setting). The fit is fabulous and figure flattering to enhance your best assets. Since it is a bit snug in the bust as previously noted, I will add a hook and eye at the top of the zipper to ensure it doesn’t break over the long term. At 5 ft 4 inches, the skirt falls perfectly below the knees.

The Tattoo Print is so fun and not overpowering because of its classic rockabilly design. You can pair it with a 23-25 inch petticoat for extra volume with a cute solid cardigan for any occasion. Add a hair flower or your favorite accessories to complete the ensemble. Photos truly do not do this dress justice, it is even more beautiful in person!

Whether you are a shopper on a budget or just looking for something different to try, H & R London is definitely a brand to check out! They have several fun colorful prints along with some more classic options as well.

Perfect Workplace Separates ~ Wardrobe Staples ~

As many of you can attest, there is surely no shortages of vintage inspired dresses on the market. One thing that there never seems to be enough of is vintage inspired separates. You may own a fabulous high waist pencil skirt but if you don’t have any tops to pair it with, what’s a girl to do? Well, when you finally find tops that fit you perfect…you buy them in every color! The Gia top from Pinup Girl Clothing is a must have for all retro wardrobes!

Available in size S to 2x in a variety of colors – MSRP $42USD

The Gia top is made from a high quality jersey knit with a massive amount of stretch. If you are in between sizes, you can definitely size down for a more snug all over fit. The Medium fits perfectly (measurements: 36-29-41) but I can safely wear a small as well, demonstrated with the Gia in black. By sizing down, you should know it will be more revealing in the bust area. The faux wrap keeps the cleavage under control while concealing the stomach area with the rushing and lined front. I never have the feeling there could be a wardrobe malfunction with the amazingly constructed bodice. The long sleeves are a perfect wrist length but those with a longer torso may find the Gia top on the short side if not tucked in. At 5ft 4inches tall, I find myself regularly adjusting to ensure it does not ride up while sitting.

As you can see, I love the Gia so much I purchased them in every color with exception to the white as it is known to be a bit transparent. This is the one top I wear all winter long to the office and I cannot recommend it enough to everyone. They wash incredibly well and they still look brand new after wearing them weekly during the fall & winter season last year. The jersey knit is lightweight and the material breathes incredibly well to avoid sweating or temperature fluctuations normally felt with a synthetic fibers.

The Gia is so versatile you can pair it with almost anything; pencil skirt, dress pants, cigarette pants, jeans…the list goes on! Add a cardigan with your favorite accessories to dress it up for any occasion. It’s by far my number one go-to work outfit, even on those days when you’re feeling body conscious. The side gathers are curve-loving with a forgiving drape all in one package.

When you finally find separates that you love…make sure to snatch them up in every color! The Gia is hands down a wardrobe staple for all pinup lovers, especially those looking for work appropriate attire. I am sincerely hoping PUG releases the Gia top in more colorways, especially in plum!
