Swallows, Anchors & Roses – OH MY!

The best part of blogging is having the opportunity to share new finds with my readers. I often stick to the vintage repro brands we all know and love but sometimes I like to gamble on the unknown. Most of us find ourselves on a tight budget when it comes to buying things we want vs our needs. For those of you looking for affordable alternatives, let me introduce Hearts & Roses London. Their designs are priced between $40-$55 and are fabricated in China. With quality questions in mind, I decided to take the plunge with the Flocked Red 50’s Tattoo Print Rockabilly Dress from Rockabilly Pinup UK.

Available Sizes UK8 to UK16 in Red or Black Tattoo Print – MSRP £29.50 ($46USD)

With any new brand, sizing is always a challenge and you must do your homework before buying. After consulting with the H & R London size chart and feedback from Rockabilly Pinup, I opted to go with the UK12(Medium) as my measurements are bust 36, waist 29, hips 42. The Medium is said to fit bust 35/36, waist 27/29, hips 38/39. If you are in-between sizes, I highly recommend to size up as there is little stretch in the fabric. Also, the bust is quite snug on the Medium and I cannot wear any kind bust enhancing undergarments.

The 1950’s dress is made from a beautiful red flocked material featuring traditional rockabilly tattoo print swallows, anchors, stars and roses. It features a sweetheart black trimmed neckline with three smalls bows on the fitted bodice and concealed side zipper. The flared skirt is trimmed with a peak-a-boo black netting to add a little extra volume. This feature is something I will probably remove as I am not too keen on exposed tulle.

When it comes to the overall quality I am very satisfied considering the price point. The fabric is quite thick, perfect for those cooler months and the design is well constructed. I was a bit nervous when ironing the flocked print but it came out beautifully (note: use low heat setting). The fit is fabulous and figure flattering to enhance your best assets. Since it is a bit snug in the bust as previously noted, I will add a hook and eye at the top of the zipper to ensure it doesn’t break over the long term. At 5 ft 4 inches, the skirt falls perfectly below the knees.

The Tattoo Print is so fun and not overpowering because of its classic rockabilly design. You can pair it with a 23-25 inch petticoat for extra volume with a cute solid cardigan for any occasion. Add a hair flower or your favorite accessories to complete the ensemble. Photos truly do not do this dress justice, it is even more beautiful in person!

Whether you are a shopper on a budget or just looking for something different to try, H & R London is definitely a brand to check out! They have several fun colorful prints along with some more classic options as well.

  1. Hell bunny do a gorgeous tattoo flock dress, available in red, black and white. They used to do it in brighr pink and we had it as our bridesmaids dresses. X

  2. I’ve had some really great H&R dresses before now – a really good brand for when I’m feeling a bit strapped for cash x

  3. This is a great blog, Jessica. Thanks. You look great, the dress seems really great at a very low price. I agree with you about the tulle at the hem. I would probably cut it or remove it. I like your pictures. XO
