A Solid Foundation

It may sound a bit cliche…but without the proper foundation garments, your favorite outfit will never look 100% perfect. The vintage pin up world is full of fabulous strapless numbers and unique designs that require a special bra that seem to be rather impossible to find. Our fabulous vintage predecessors had the right idea with their classic longline bustiers. With my upcoming nuptials it was time to go shopping for a solid foundation to pair with a fitted wedding gown. Orchard Corset came to the table with their great selection of Dominique longline bustiers and opted to try the 8949 Lace Longline Torsolette.

Available in sizes 32B to 44F in black, ivory & white – MSRP $69USD

Shopping online for undergarments can be rather tricky since most brands follow different schools of thought when it comes to sizing. Since I have zero experience with the Dominique line, it was a case of trial and error to find the right fit. To start, I normally wear 34DD in US sizing and opted to try the 8949 Torsolette in a 34D since many reviews stated the cup sizes ran a bit large. Well, unfortunately it was too large in both the cups as it gaped considerably and the waistband was not firm on the tightest hook.  Thankfully it was easy to reorder a smaller size, this time I tried the 32D since the cups are smaller as you go down in band size. The fit was MUCH better, the longline was perfectly snug all over and the cup size was more in line. There is still a bit of gaping in the bust but I plan to add a little extra volume with inserts since the 8949 is not a push up.

The 8949 features underwire support with a strapless design and convertible straps as well. The key point to mention, this longline is designed for full figured women…perfect for ladies with curves. The light boning slims and cinches your waist while contouring the hips creating a flawless hourglass silhouette. If your stomach is a trouble zone, the 8949 is a miracle worker in itself. The timeless lace is not only beautiful, it’s a breathable material to ensure comfort for all day wear. This style is also great for medium to semi-low back dresses; if you need a plunging back there are other options in the Dominique brand. I found there was a little back cleavage happening since I like the band rather tight on my undergarments but a couple quick adjustments it was concealed.  The shaping power of the boning is incredible and quite comfortable and not constricting like a corset.

Believe it or not, the 8949 is great to wear under your every day clothes. I wore mine with the Heartbreaker Marilyn t-shirt and jeans to give a little extra definition to my hourglass shape, the difference was like night and day! If you are looking for the right foundation for that special dress, you need to try a longline bustier as you will learn to no longer fear strapless styles.

The 8949 Lace Longline Torsolette will be worn on my wedding day and with many of other outfits in the future. I look forward to trying the various Dominique longline bustiers as my collection is only beginning. Don’t forget to use the 15% off coupon (PINUP2013) from Orchard Corset on your next order…conveniently located on the blog mainpage.

Vintage Style In A Tropical Paradise

Time has flown by and in a few short weeks I will be saying “I do” on the beautiful beaches in the Bahamas. Being our first trip to the tropics, I didn’t hesitate to take advantage of the opportunity to stock up on several vintage tiki style dresses for our getaway. I made sure to snatch up the Collectif Regina Pencil Dress in Blue Hibiscus during their end of season 40% off blow out sale.

Available in sizes UK6-UK22 in a variety of colors & prints – MSRP £50

I have found that Collectif’s sizing has become more consistent with their recent collections and generally fall in a Medium (UK12) with ease (measurements 36-29-41). The Regina Dress features cap sleeves and a soft sweetheart neckline. I am happy to report the sleeves are not restrictive and designed with the proper proportions in mind. Made from a lightweight non stretch printed cotton, perfect for those hot summer nights. The knee length pencil skirt is figure flattering but not restrictive as you walk.

The Regina dress is a simple but elegant vintage design suitable for many body types; also available in a swing skirt as well. The hibiscus print is truly breathtakingly beautiful and sure to make you stand out in a crowd. (Maybe I am a little partial since the hibiscus flower is a personal favorite.) If you are looking for a more every day dress, the Regina is also available in solids. As one of Collectif’s best sellers, new colors and prints are released every season. Don’t let me forget to mention, it is super comfortable for all day wear!

This beauty is going to be perfect for the Bahamas but definitely wearable for any summer occasion you may attend. You can add some super fun accessories to complete your look: a skinny belt, a contrasting bangle bracelet, a bold hair flower or a funky necklace to play up your ensemble and don’t forget a pair of cute wedges. If you’re looking to enhance your silhouette, pair it with your favorite shapewear for a little extra vava-voom!

I promise to make a conscious effort to take oodles of photos of our getaway to share with all of you. Stay tuned…lots of vintage inspired swimwear features coming soon!

Review – Jenny Skirts from Pin Up Girl Clothing

The lovely Amber is guest blogging today about the new PUG Jenny Skirts. xo

PinUp at Heart

I know I don’t do many clothing reviews here on the blog but when Jessica from PinUp Persuasion ( put out a call for reviews on the Pin Up Girl (PUG) Jenny skirt I was happy to oblige.  Let me first start by saying if you are a lover of pin up girl styles head over to Jessica’s blog STAT – she does honest, thorough reviews of pin up style reproduction vintage clothes from a number of companies (Bettie Page, PUG, Glamour Bunny, etc.).

I’ve been a fan of PUG clothing for quite awhile now.  Here are just a few of their dresses that you’ve seen me in –

A few months back (probably around the holidays) PUG posted a picture on their Facebook page of a photo shoot featuring sample dresses from their upcoming Spring line – I saw a harlequin print from 10 miles away.  I was in love…

Nothing Like the Gentle Touch of a Sea Breeze

Last year, Bettie Page Clothing released the breathtaking Sea Breeze Dress for their 2012 Spring/Summer collection. I knew instantly it would find a home in my closet as the beautiful aqua blue was shouting buy me, buy me! Knowing I had more than enough dresses to wear for the summer, I waited for the end of season sales and snagged it for a steal of a deal at JBR Clothing.

Available in sizes XS to 4X – MSRP $126 USD.

In my experience with Bettie Page, I find their sizing to be a bit inconsistent as they do not offer individual item specific size charts. Knowing the Sea Breeze was made from a 4-way stretch material, it was safe to say a Medium would be the way to go. With my measurements 36-29-41, the sizing was spot on and the fit was perfect. The crisp white trim, buttons and belt are a fabulous accent to the aqua blue; a truly beautiful vintage color combination. The material is not only stretchy but has substantial weight and thickness as well. One of the greatest features I must mention…POCKETS!!! The wide white straps allow you to wear your favorite bras while not sacrificing comfort and support. At 5 feet 4 inches tall, the lovely swing skirt falls a couple inches below the knee.

The Sea Breeze is one of the most comfortable dresses and suitable for various body types. I absolutely adore the fabulous quality and feel of the fabric, perfect to keep you cool on those warm summer days. The contrasting white belt defines your waist while the swing skirt drapes flowingly away from your hips. You can skip the shapewear and wear the Sea Breeze with confidence.

This little number is perfect for the office or afternoon party when paired with a white cardigan and ballet flats. Kick it up a notch with a pair of pearls, high heel Mary-Janes and short white gloves for a timeless ensemble . The Sea Breeze has a classic vintage design sure to appeal to those seeking a true 1950’s look.

I have always been a sucker vintage reproduction designs that truly capture the classic elements of the era. The Bettie Page Sea Breeze is definitely a winner in those regards and a fabulous go to dress when you’re short on time but don’t want to sacrifice style.
