Show Off Your True Colors!

Blogging has truly been a blessing in so many ways and allowed me to get to know my readers on a more personal level. In the early beginnings of Pin Up Persuasion I was contacted by the super sweet Jasmine, who had just started her own business – Betty Le Bonbon Cheek Boutique. A mother and daughter team, they design for women of all ages, shapes and sizes with a focus on curvier figures. BLBB is one of a kind with the most unique variety of fabrics offered in custom designs at an affordable price. As soon as I laid eyes on the breathtaking peacock print, I had to have it in my very own circle skirt!

Available in sizes 28″ – 45″+ (custom sizing as well) in a multitude of colors & prints ~ MSRP $55-$100

BLBBSkirtHaving the option of custom sizing was a bit daunting initially as I have always shopped “off the rack” with my online purchases and feared I would mess it up. Quickly I grabbed my favorite PUG Doris swing skirts as reference to see how the waistband measured compared to my natural waist. Also, keep in mind you get to pick the skirt length as well; measure your favorite skirt or dress from the waist down to get a firm idea of what looks good on you. After chatting with Jas, I decided to order the peacock circle skirt in 30″ waist and 26″ length with a 2″ deep waistband. When my package arrived, I couldn’t help but squeal with delight as the peacock print was truly breathtaking with small hints of gold. The fit was spot on and the metal hook with zipper back closure was so well constructed.

BLBBSkirt3BLBB circle skirts are fabulous for every day wear and versatile based on the tops you pair it with. I have to mention the quality of these handmade skirts are incredible and worth every penny especially since they are not being mass produced. I opted to take advantage of their Layby program in order to pay for my purchase over a period of time; their terms are VERY reasonable to say the least! Click here for more information.

BLBBSkirt2Your options are endless…pair it with a tank, a tee-shirt, a blouse, you name it! The BLBB circle skirts are great for the office, a family BBQ, engagement photos, or a soiree with a loved one. Separates are always a must in any retro wardrobe, they never get tired. The peacock print is truly spectacular and works with so many colours. A personal favorite is pairing it with the peach Deadly Dames Vamp top to bring out the eye of the feather.

BLBBSkirt1BLBB has recently announced some pretty exciting news…they will be offering vintage inspired dresses very soon! You can also find super cute retro aprons and totes as well. I am so proud of how Jasmine’s business has blossomed in such a short time and wish her continued success in her new endeavor! Check out her fabulous blog –> Here <–

Jasmine has graciously offered a discount exclusive to Pin Up Persuasion readers until June 15th – Custom made skirts in any fabric listed here up to a 45″ waist for $82; 45″ and up waist for $92. Just email BLBB and mention Pin Up Persuasion to redeem the discount.

Get Back in the Swing of Things

After a short hiatus from blogging, I’m back! It’s been a busy two weeks with our nuptials in the Bahamas and being under the weather upon our return. Time to get back to business…

With another closet clean out complete, I have realized I instinctively gravitate towards wiggle dresses but really need to focus on more swing styles as they are way more practical for every day wear. With that in mind, it was a no-brainer to purchase the Milan Dress from Heartbreaker Haute available at JBR Clothing.

Available in sizes XS to 2X in a variety of colors & prints – MSRP $136USD

HBMilanIn my experience with Heartbreaker, their measurements are consistent with the size chart and opted to order a Medium (36-28-41). I found the Milan runs a bit generous in the Lake colorway; size down if you prefer a snug fit. The Milan is made from 100% Polyester and truly feels like silk on your skin. Hands down, it is the most glorious fabric and the full swing skirt flows beautifully. The design features a knife pleat in center back and matching belt to cinch your waist. The wide straps are perfect to conceal your favorite bra and modest criss cross front is perfect for all bust sizes. Due to having a short torso, my seamstress had to raise the shoulders considerably to achieve a proper fit.

HBMilan4The Milan is a timeless design and ideal for every occasion. Now available in a multitude of colorways and prints; I can see myself owning more than just one. At 5ft 4 inches, the length falls a couple inches below the knee and I don’t feel the need to hem it any shorter. The silkiness of the skirt will just make you want to twirl over and over…did I mention it’s heavenly?

HBMilan3Perfect for the office or an afternoon gathering, the options are endless. Pair the Milan with your sexiest heels and vintage pearls to complete the ensemble. Shapewear is not required with the comfortable relaxed fit; ideal for those days where you find yourself short on time.

HBMilan2The Milan is not only elegant but delightful in every way. Mission accomplished with the addition of this fabulous swing dress to my collection. Heartbreaker has added several new colors and prints with the 2013 Spring Collection; the Celery Sateen is exquisite.

At Attention ~ In Style

It must have been well over a year that this particular number teased us in the Pinup Girl Clothing “Coming Soon” section and I could never seem to get her off my mind. The Military Pinup Dress has an assertive and polished style that is truly one of a kind. Even with all the delays in production of its initial release, it was definitely worth the wait! I snagged this beauty from one of my favorite Canadian boutiques, Rowena(

Available in sizes XS to 2X in Olive Green & Black – MSRP $104USD

Thanks to PUG’s trusted individual size charts, it was easy to determine the Medium would be an ideal fit with measurements 36-28-40 (note when I ordered it I was 36-29-42). The Military Pinup Dress is made from the most incredible stretch bengaline to date; it’s much thicker than the previous PUG bengaline I find. The weight of the fabric is definitely more forgiving over your trouble areas and ultra stretchy. Keep in mind the constructed bust is designed for the smaller busts since the underseam will run up higher on larger bust sizes (At a 34DD, there was plenty of room and no trouble with the underseam riding up). That’s a lot of bust talk in one sentence. Lol. The Military Pinup Dress features a beautiful kick pleat and contrasting red trim and belt. One area of concern to note, if you have larger arms you may find the red trim around the sleeves a bit snug as it has zero stretch allowance. A simple solution would be to have a tailor insert a small slit in the underarm section so it won’t be visible or alter the overall design.

This polished beauty is perfect to wear to the office and transition to a night on the town. I am a sucker for retro dresses with kickpleats, they are simply timeless and so classy! The bengaline is curve hugging and helps create the illusion of a hourglass silhouette. This number is so exquisitely constructed, it sucks you in wonderfully and accents you in the right places. I paired it with the Rago 6201 Shorts for a little extra help in that department; the Rago 1294 Girdle would be perfect equivalent as well. Surprisingly the length looked splendid a couple inches below the knee (5ft 4inches tall). As you can see on PUG’s site, the Military Pinup Dress is designed to fall a bit higher on the knee. Everyone has their preferences; I am partial to showing less leg as they are not one of my favorite features.

There are no shortages of excellent accessories from PUG to pair with the Military Pinup Dress. Sadly I don’t own shoes in the right shade of red so a simple black pump was my second choice. Check out the PUG Cherry Aeroplane Bag and Lolita Pumps to create the most incredibly decked out ensemble from head to toe!

Sometimes delays in production lead to disappointment with all the build of anticipation but this was surely not the case with the Military Pinup Dress. Definitely one of the more understated PUG Designs that needs to be recognized for it’s gloriousness! I was so happy to hear this was the next review you wanted to read and truly hope it inspires you to consider one for yourself.

Repost: Become An Online Shopping Guru

Last September I wrote the following article for Pinup Girl Style and wanted to share it with all of you as well…

As many of you already know, buying online can be a daunting task and at times very costly if you don’t know the Do’s & Don’ts. In recent years I have become a bit of an online shopping guru with a bunch of tricks up my sleeve to save time and money on all my purchases. It is very rare that I have to return anything and more often times than none, manage to score amazing deals for less than retail and save on costly international shipping. Now I will share these Tips & Tricks so you too can become a Online Shopping Guru!

Bargains are not always a good deal! – This is a lesson I had to learn the hard way as I went through my closet full of clothes still with tags attached. Just because you find an item on sale does not mean you should buy it! Yes, you heard right. If you tend to click “check out” on things just because they are “on sale” you are guilty of being a impulse bargain shopper. Think long and hard about it…would you buy this item if it were not on sale? If you know deep down the answer is no, then you are best to pass up this bargain for something you really want. Otherwise you will have a closet full of clothes that never get worn and realize you truly did not save money on that sale purchase.

Know your options – There are several retailers that carry PUG and other vintage repro clothing all over the world. If they carry PUG, you are supporting them even without buying direct from the designer. Finding local retailers is always a good option when you want to save on international shipping costs/duties/taxes or even have the chance to try things on before buying. Smaller retailers are known to provide impeccable customer service and ensure customer satisfaction every time.

Get to know the retailer/brand before you buy – The internet is the best tool around for you to make educated purchases. Before you buy, research! Check out online reviews, customer feedback on quality, sizing…you name it! There are an abundance of online resources to help you make the right purchase. This past January, I created a blog (Pin Up Persuasion) focused on detailed reviews about various vintage repro retailers, clothing, and more. There are definitely many more bloggers out there helping to share their wealth of knowledge with fellow shoppers.

Beware of the dreaded Shipping Charges – This is one of the biggest issues for International buyers since shipping is often more expensive than the purchase itself. Don’t fret, there are options available that you may not of known until now. First, PUG offers free shipping for purchases over $150 (domestic) and over $300 (International). If you can’t quite afford $300 all at once, there is definitely someone else in the same boat as you. Seek out other PUG customers in your area that are willing to combine orders, then everyone wins! The PUG community is pretty incredible and I know of so many ladies that combine their orders on a regular basis. Many of them, developing amazing friendships as a result…win/win. Another option is to buy from your local retailer, they are bound to offer affordable shipping options.

Duties/Taxes/Brokerage fees add up – Before you buy from a out of country retailer, know your countries import fees to avoid a nasty bill after the fact. For example, Canada only charges taxes on purchases from PUG…no duties since they are manufactured in the US but Fedex will tack on a brokerage fee ($10) to bring it across the border on your behalf. All these little “extras” add up fast. Make sure to look up your government purchase restrictions before you buy. This is another reason you may prefer to buy from a local retailers instead, then there are no surprises. If you live in Canada, stay away from retailers who ship via UPS. Why? UPS charges the most absurd “handling/brokerage” fees just to bring the parcel across the border which are above and beyond duties and taxes by the government.

P.S. There is a way to avoid the Fedex brokerage fee, I’ll share that if anyone is interested at a later time 🙂

New or Gently Used Clothing – The best deals are always on the PUG Swap & Sell Page on Facebook and Pinup Girl Style. Often times, these items are new with tags or very gently used at incredible prices. If you are looking for discontinued items, or just don’t have the budget to pay full price…this is the place to shop. I have done a few closet clean outs with tons of items brand new, never worn and always found new homes with fabulous buyers from all over the world. Be smart, use Paypal and keep all shipping receipts to ensure smooth transactions. It is a fine community and highly recommend it to everyone!

I probably could go on forever with more Tips & Tricks but these are definitely a good foundation to become a Online Shopping Guru. Always trust your gut and avoid impulse buys at all times. Your wallet will thank you later 🙂
