There’s a Little Rebel in All of us.

The pin up culture is fortunate to have various styles of fashion to please all tastes. Whether you love flirty swing dresses or a more edgy look…there’s something for everyone. It is no secret that I am a sucker for floral prints and the femininity of the 1950’s era but that does not mean that I don’t love the edgier side known as Rockabilly. This style is known for it’s bold use of colour, prints and overall edginess. Cherries, skulls, sparrows, hearts, anchors, stripes and polka dots are just some of the incredible characteristics of Rockabilly fashion. I personally find many of the designs to be a more casual relaxed look, perfect for everyday wear. With that in mind, it was no doubt the Collectif Marina Jumper and Rebel Kate Denim were going to become an instant wardrobe staple.

Rebel Kate Denim – Available in sizes UK6-UK18 ~MSRP £35

Marina Jumper – Available in sizes UK6-UK22 ~ MSRP £27.50

IMG_2116Now this is where it got tricky, how was I ever going to buy denim online without even trying them? I loathe shopping for jeans because they never fit due to my small waist (28″) and curvier hips (40″), it’s always a nightmare that leads to epic disappointment. I consulted with the gals at Collectif to assist with sizing recommendations for the Rebel Kate Denim and they suggested a UK12(Medium) since my hips were slightly too big for the UK10(Small). When they arrived, it was apparent that they were very loose in the waist and the rise was too long for me. Exchanging them for a UK10 was definitely the way to go and with the stretch of the denim it accommodated my larger hips. The Rebel Kate is designed with the retro high waist featuring a three button closure with a structured waist panel and drainpipe cut. Unlike most high waist pants, the front panel construction is wonderful at smoothing the tummy area and a very figure flattering design. There is a fair amount of stretch in the denim which provides a body hugging silhouette. At 5′-4″ tall, I do need to cuff the pants legs as they are a couple inches too long.

IMG_2075The Marina Jumper is known to run smaller than most Collectif tops but since I have a short torso, I opted to stick with my usual UK10(Small). If you have an average to long torso, sizing up is highly recommended otherwise you will find it too short in length. The Marina Jumper features square neckline, 3/4 length sleeves and side splits at the hips which is quite lovely to compliment our figures. Made from a soft stretchy knit, which is quite thick and perfect for cooler temps. They are so versatile to mix and match, since they will go with just about everything. The Marina is hands down one of my favorite tops of all time, I want them in ALL colours!

IMG_2086Due to the fact I sized down in the denim, there is some pulling causing the lining of the front pockets to poke out. Hopefully with time and wear, the denim will stretch/relax and make that issue disappear altogether. The Rebel Kate Denim are very comfortable and are sure to become a wardrobe staple for all that own a pair. Combining the Marina Jumper with the Rebel Kate Denim is a perfect ensemble. The combination is a prime example of what Rockabilly fashion is all about. Accessorize with a head scarf or a cute swallow necklace and your favorite pair of high heels.

IMG_2084It’s been a while since I indulged in my love of Rockabilly fashion and I couldn’t be more pleased with the Marina Jumper and Rebel Kate Denim. Adding more separates to your wardrobe is always a great investment and with such staples, you are sure to get your moneys worth.

Comfort, Functionality & Beauty All in One

There is no shortage of inspiration in today’s vintage reproduction fashion from a time where being housewife required comfort and functionality while not sacrificing beauty. This is indicative of why there is an abundance of fabulous designs known as “shirt dresses”; due to their collared, button down blouse design in either A-line or circle skirt. The overall design is simplistic but that does not deter from its splendor in any regard. When Heart of Haute (formerly known as Heartbreaker Fashion) released their new Haute Collection, I instantly fell in love with the Monte Carlo Dress; inspired from the fabulous qualities of the infamous “1950’s shirt dresses”. When spring came around, new colorways were released and I fell over heals for the Monte Carlo Dress in Celery Sateen. Since JBR Clothing is always so quick to bring in the latest fashions, I purchased mine as soon as they arrived.

Available in sizes XS to 2X in a variety of colors ~ MSRP $148USD

IMG_1825Now that Heart of Haute has two separate collections, I find the sizing varies slightly between the regular line and the Teresa Marie line. After purchasing the Milan and Marleen, I found the sizing was cut more generous than the size chart. In both cases, I could have easily sized down therefore I decided to order the Monte Carlo in a Small. It appears my experience served me well as the Small fit like a glove and even more incredible in person. The Monte Carlo features ¾ length sleeves with a lovely cuff detail, functional covered buttons along with a size zipper, matching slide belt and a fabulous full swing skirt. Often times I find shirt dresses are too wide in the shoulders or too long in the torso and make for a very poor fit overall without costly alterations. Having a petite frame frequently works against me with particular styles but sizing down in the Monte Carlo really worked in my favor to eliminate those concerns. The full swing skirt drapes beautifully and falls a few inches below the knee at 5’-4” tall.

IMG_1827Where do I begin? I absolutely adore everything about the Monte Carlo and could not be more thrilled about the perfect fit right off the rack. This dress is incredibly comfortable and can be worn as an everyday dress just like those worn by the 1950’s housewives. The Celery Sateen is such a breathtaking shade and the fabric is such great quality, one that will last you for years to come. My only displeasure is with the matching slide belt; unfortunately it never stays closed and I constantly have to cinch it back into place. To my surprise, the other colorways have a matching grommet style belt but strangely the celery is the only exception. It may have something to do with the sateen fabric but I guess that will remain a mystery for now.

IMG_1821With the simplistic design of the shirt style dresses, there is no shortage of options when it comes to accessorizing. As I often wear the Monte Carlo to work, I pair it with a single strand pearl necklace and my favorite round toe pumps. Comfort is positively key and I personally find less is more with the Monte Carlo. For those who desire a little added volume with the circle skirt, adding a light petticoat will work best. If you prefer a narrow style belt, pair it with a contrasting patent leather for a touch of added flair.

IMG_1820With my ever growing Heart of Haute collection, their designs never fail to blow me away with each new addition. They are one of the few vintage reproduction companies that fit right off the rack and never require any alterations whatsoever. I often find myself wearing their dresses more often than any others, since they are ideal for work or simply going out and about on every day errands.

More Bang For Your Buck ~ Wardrobe Staples

There are a very few things in life that make me giddier than a school girl but my adoration for peacocks always brings me such joy. From the colors, to its graceful elegance…there is nothing more regal than the mighty peacock. When I happen upon the most incredible vintage inspired clothing, I must have it! Last year I reviewed my first Custom Skirt from Betty Le Bonbon in peacock feather print and it quickly became a personal favorite. This past fall, BLBB introduced the most elegant peacock fabric; even more stunning than the feather print. There was no doubt it was soon to join my collection.

BLBB Circle Skirt – Available in custom sizes ~ MSRP Starting at $90AUD

Hell Bunny Paloma Cardigan – Available in sizes XS to XL; BLK, GRN, Red ~ MSRP $39USD

BLBB1What I love most about BLBB is the fact all skirts are made to measure so there is no guessing needed about sizing. If you know how to measure yourself, then you are sure to get a perfect fit (they will also provide guidance if needed). When ordering a skirt from BLBB, you can choose from a 1” or 2” thick waistband and specify the desired length. Since I love my other custom skirt so much, I kept the same 2″ wide waistband and length (26”). When me new BLBB skirt arrived I was over the moon in love with the print, even more so than before. To my surprise, the length seemed a little longer than I remembered and after checking I saw that it actually measured 28”. This was definitely not a big deal as the length is more period specific to the 1950’s circle skirts and not too long on me at 5’-4” tall. The BLBB skirts are all handmade with a metal hook and zipper closure located at the back. The quality is impeccable and well worth the investment for a custom made piece.

BLBB2Owning versatile separates is the key to any wardrobe; having choices to mix and match makes your money go much further. Who doesn’t want that? I am certain you have all seen dresses in the same beautiful peacock print, but there is nothing more advantageous than owning a skirt that can be paired with almost anything. One of my personal resolutions was to purchase more separates since I have more than a closet full of pretty dresses. The BLBB skirt was an easy choice to make and I cannot believe how many outfits I can create for both winter and summer. Being that we are in the coldest time of year right now, pairing it with a cardigan is a must. Since there is a variety of a color in the lovely peacock print, it was easy to choose the ideal coordinating pieces to pair it with.

BLBB3One of my favorite colors to wear is green, seeing as I am a self-proclaimed redhead. When JBR Clothing posted the new arrivals including the Hell Bunny Paloma Green Cardigan, I quickly grabbed one before they were all gone. Cardigans are perfect for year round and really help make most outfits’ workplace appropriate. Since most knits are known to run small and I also wanted to be able to button it closed, I ordered a size Medium which fit wonderfully. The cropped length is perfect to pair with your retro clothing, or even a simple tank top and jeans for a casual look. Coordinating the Paloma Cardigan with the BLBB Peacock Skirt was a no brainer. Needless to say, I received many compliments when wearing the duo together.

IMG_2030It is refreshing to see an independent retailer that focuses not only on beauty but incredible quality for your money. BLBB is not mass produced and you are sure to fall in love with every piece you purchase. My two custom skirts get the most wear out of my entire closet and I always receive oodles of compliments wherever I go.
