A Treasure Lost but Never Forgotten

In continuation with our summer vintage reproduction swimsuit series…next up is a household name in the industry, Vintage Suits by Mary! With years of experience in the swimsuit industry, Mary began creating her own line of retro inspired pieces reminiscent of the original designs from the 1940-1950’s. Last month Mary sadly announced that she will be winding down her business due to personal health issues but fortunately, you can still find many of her designs at major retailers like Pinup Girl Clothing and on clearance in the VSBM Etsy Shop.

Available is XS-2X in a variety of colours/prints ~ MSRP $97USD

IMG_2453 IMG_2445Before making my purchase, I contacted Mary directly through her social media to discuss sizing and what she recommended as I was in between a Medium/Large. As we all know, having an ill-fitting swimsuit only leads to major disappointment and self-doubt being completely exposed on the beach. Since the 2pc Swimsuit was sold as a set, Mary recommended that I go with a size Medium and the bottoms would accommodate my hips that were slightly larger at that time (36-29-42). She was spot on as the Medium fit wonderfully and stretched just enough in the hips. Now that I have slimmed down (36-27-39), they still fit perfectly and I don’t have to invest in buying new suits thankfully. The 2pc Swimsuit is fully lined with powernet fabric to smooth your lumps & bumps, features a very delightful high waist faux skirt which is ultra-slimming due to the shirring, a lightly padded halter strap top with hook neck and back closures.

IMG_2454 IMG_2450At the time that I placed my order, VSBM was offering custom orders in a variety of prints and colours in their staple designs. As I was torn between several choices, Mary sent me little swatches of all the available fabrics to choose from so that I could see them in person before investing in her pieces. I knew right away the emerald green was a must and chose a fun summer print with the teal polka dots. When both swimsuits arrived, I was blown away at the incredible quality and construction as they are all handmade pieces. You don’t have to have a perfect body to rock the VSBM 2pc Swimsuit, the high waist faux skirt combined with the powernet lining are great to hide a trouble tummy area (like I have). The padded halter top has the right amount of support to even hold a 34DD/30F bust, there’s no reason for concern that a beach wardrobe malfunction will occur. The 2pc Swimsuit is designed to flatter a curvy figure and accentuate in all the right places.

IMG_2459 IMG_2448I purchased the 2pc Swimsuit for our wedding that took place in the Bahamas, as I knew traditional bikinis were definitely not for this gal. Accessorizing them was simple and fun. I paired them with my Rx retro sunglasses, flips flops and coordinating hair flowers to complete my beach look. If you plan to walk around in your beachwear and seeking a little more modesty, simply tie a lovely sarong wrap around your waist.

IMG_2457 IMG_2447It is with great sadness to see such an incredible business shut its doors. Vintage Suits by Mary will be talked about for years to come as their swimsuits are sure to last just as long with their impeccable craftsmanship of those from the 1940-1950’s. Make sure to grab them while you still can, there are still plenty of styles available on Etsy and at Pinup Girl Clothing. Once they are gone…you will regret that you missed out.
