Life Comes Full Circle

Lately I’ve found myself very inspired by a couple of fellow pinups that are quite well known within our lovely online community. Their fabulous sense of style has motivated me to venture outside of my comfort zone, finally taking the leap to overcome the notion that I simply can’t pull it off like others do. For one of our last summer shoots, I was inspired by the lovely Miss Amy May’s signature sock bun hairstyle and decided to look up some online tutorial to attempt my very own. To my surprise, it was super easy and only took a couple tries before I was satisfied with the final product. When it came to styling my ensemble, I felt there was some serious influence from Miss Victory Violet as she is known to create bold colour combinations sure to make a statement. With the magical combination of both those lovely ladies, I found myself feeling more confident than ever rockin’ the Deadly Curves Skirt in Cream Rose Floral by Deadly Dames!

Available in sizes XS-4X ~ MSRP $84 on Clearance now $42

IMG_5837 IMG_5860When it comes to choosing the right size in pencil skirts, I always have to succumb to the fact that my waist to hip ratio means I have to size up and invest in alterations. The Deadly Curves Skirt was no exception as it’s made from a non stretch fabric and my waist (27″) is a size Small but my hips (38-39″) are a Medium. It was no surprise that the size Medium fit my hips perfectly but the waist was gaping considerably. Thankfully I have a very skilled seamstress that tailored the waist beautifully without changing to original design. Now it fits like a glove! The Deadly Curves Skirt features sexy curve hugging design with a lovely kick-pleat, back zipper closure, unlined and comes with a wide vinyl belt in black. The fabric is a thick stretch (minimal) cotton sateen therefore you don’t have worry about it being sheer. At 5′-4″ tall, the skirt falls a few inches below the knees.

IMG_5840 IMG_5869The Deadly Curves Skirt hits all the right high notes for me as I am absolutely infatuated with the elegant rose floral print. It’s classic and timeless, yet makes such a bold statement. The structure and thickness of the fabric actually permitted me to forgo wearing any shapewear and still have the illusion of a flawless silhouette. For those needing a little more help, the Rago 1294 Girdle would be your best choice. The only downside like all cotton fabric, it requires a good pressing with each wear and will wrinkle if sitting for long periods of time. The Deadly Curves Skirt is versatile for almost any occasion, dress it up or down with coordinating items already in your closet.

With inspiration from Miss Victory Violet, I chose to play up the bold colours in the rose print and create a delightful summer inspired combination. I paired the Deadly Curves Skirt with the Le Bomb Shop Cross Your Heart Bombshell Tank in fuchsia, the DD wide vinyl belt in white and my classic pinup Jane pumps in white by Ellie. Simply by changing the coordinating pieces, you can create a more fall appropriate look using the black vinyl belt that comes with the skirt.

IMG_5850 IMG_5849We are very fortunate to have so many inspiring ladies from around the globe in our marvelous pinup community. Where else can you find a such a large group of women from all walks of life that are sincerely supporting one another and sharing in their passion in a truly positive environment. These fellow pinups have not only inspired me but they have given me the spirit to believe that I too can rock any pinup look! This lifestyle of mine all began because of Pinup Girl Clothing many years ago and it is very humbling to see how it has come full circle.

PS. Don’t delay in snatching up the Deadly Curves Skirts as they are currently on clearance…once they are gone, they are not come back!

Under The Sea

Novelty prints have made an epic comeback and taking the pinup world by storm. The original vintage novelty prints are becoming harder to come by at reasonable prices as the demand has skyrocketed and left us budget minded gals wanting. Thankfully the vintage reproduction designers have heard our cries and are now delivering affordable alternatives. This past spring, The Oblong Box Shop announced it’s new Palm Springs 2015 Swing Collection full of delightful novelty prints themes that includes Tiki, Space, Ocean, and more…set to debut at the Viva Rockabilly Weekender. I couldn’t have been more excited to visit their booth to see the entire collection in person and meet the lovely designer Denialle. My heart instantly fell for the adorable little Puffer Fish Skirt and knew it was destined to become a part of my novelty print collection.

Available in sizes S-3X ~ MSRP $95USD

IMG_5971Seeing as this was my very first piece from The Oblong Box Shop, I relied on the feedback from other pinups who confirmed the size charts were indeed accurate. With my waist measuring 27″, I fell right in line with their size Small. Since there is no stretch to the waistband, definitely go by your larger measurement if your waist tends to fluctuate up and down. When my Puffer Fish Skirt arrived, I was literally giddy with excitement; my love of ocean theme prints is turning into a serious addiction. The waist fit snugly, there is no wiggle room if I was any larger since the waistband has zero give. Often with vintage circle skirts it’s next to impossible to determine where the zipper placement is intended to sit…at the back or the sides, left or right? Not thinking, I instinctively put mine on with the zipper in the back only to notice the side seam was right in the middle…Oops! If I had only looked at where the label was placed ahead of time, I would have seen that the skirt actually zips on the left hand side. Live and learn right? The Puffer Fish Skirt features an adorable repeating print, side zipper with button closure and measures 26″ in length. It is made from a quality polyester that is fabulous to not wrinkle unlike cotton. At 5′-4″ tall, the skirt falls a couple inches below the knees.

IMG_5992 IMG_5987The Oblong Box Shop truly delivered on the Palm Springs 2015 Swing Collection, there was something to please everyone’s palate. It was a treat to see how each person styled the same skirt is so many ways, making it uniquely their own. The vibrant colours in each novelty print makes it easy to mix and match with items already in your closet. I really loved the fact that the polyester proved to be very functional for two reasons; one it doesn’t wrinkle even after sitting all day at my desk and two, the gathered fabric provides enough volume that you do not need to wear a petticoat. Overall, I find the Puffer Fish Skirt to be quite practical when it comes to a busy lifestyle, who has time to iron their skirts after every wear?

IMG_5991 IMG_5975When it comes to accessorizing the Puffer Fish Skirt, you can find a variety affordable options at The Oblong Box Shop to create a complete ensemble without breaking the bank. I paired mine with the Black Lil’ Bow Peek Top ($15), Purple Wide Belt ($15), little teal starfish earrings and black Vogue wedges by Remix. They also have charming brooches and earrings that match the Palm Springs Collection perfectly. I personally prefer not to wear a petticoat but if you like a fuller look, this is definitely an option.

IMG_5973The demand for affordable novelty print skirts has been truly well received by the pinup fashion community; The Oblong Box Shop’s Palm Springs Collection continuously sells out every time they are restocked. Make sure to grab your size while it’s there! For even more savings, sign up for their fan club and you will receive monthly discount coupons in addition to their customer loyalty Rewards Program.

When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade!

With summer already coming to an end (heartbreaking), that will not stop this gal from milking every last nice day to wear fabulous dresses before the cold swoops in. After having one of the most beautifully warm summers in years, I found myself gravitating to wearing shorts quite regularly which is almost unheard of. This new found inclination made me realize that I was in desperate need of vintage inspired summer-wears but hesitancy quickly took hold. It is nearly impossible to find any styles that fit an extreme hourglass shape and suitable for a short torso. After giving up on making risky online purchases, I saw a pair of the Pinup Girl Clothing High-Waisted Shorts in Blue Lemonade Print on the PUG Swap & Sell Facebook Page and decided to give them a go since they were at a fraction of the retail price.

Available in sizes XS-2X in blue & pink ~ MSRP $62 (On clearance $32)

IMG_5767One of the things I love most about buying from Pinup Girl Clothing is their non generic size charts. Each item has their very own size chart which makes shopping online must less of a gamble. When I decided to take the plunge with the PUG High-Waisted Shorts, I did so because the size Small measurements coincided with mine (waist 27″, hips 38-39″) and the gal I bought them from helped tremendously by providing the inseam length as well. I held my breath when they arrived and quickly went to try them on. It was a sense of shock and amazement, they actually fit…this was a summer miracle! The PUG High-Waisted shorts feature a high empire waist with slight curve, an elastic ruched back panel, cuffed leg design, and back zipper closure. The elastic panel is what makes these shorts magic for those with a small waist and larger hips. No more baggy waist, the elastic keeps the waist snug but does not restrict your movement or comfort level.

IMG_5759 IMG_5778Pinup Girl Clothing has clearly created a classic summer staple with the High-Waisted Shorts. Although I love fun prints, I normally gravitate towards bottoms in solid colours for versatility and personal comfort. The blue lemonade print is simply adorable and much more charming in person. There are enough colours to pull from that also make them pretty versatile to mix and match with tops already in your closet. Since I am on the higher end of the size small measurements, they are quite fitted throughout and find that the firm waistband does cause a little tummy pooch effect since that is one of my trouble areas. It’s nothing that the right undergarments can’t fix, I would recommend some tummy control panties to smooth and hold.

IMG_5776The great thing about versatile separates, you can mix and match with what is already in your closet. With the busy lemonade print, I wanted to keep the accents simple. I paired them with the PUG Peasant Top in white, vintage yellow beaded necklace and white espadrille sandals. This look is ideal for almost any outing, classic mixed with a little cuteness.

IMG_5762Make sure to grab these while you can, the PUG High-Waited Shorts in blue and pink Lemonade Print are currently on clearance now! I am truly hoping to see this style come back next summer in solid colours and more fun prints. Fabulous summer staples like these don’t come along often enough.

Taking Flight Into a New Era

This year my goal was to wear every single item in my closet at least once since we’ve had one of the most beautiful summers in years. Surprisingly, this adventure allowed me to further develop my style and discover new eras of vintage fashion. We are seeing vintage reproduction clothing design move into a new generation by mixing vintage elements with modern styling to create a fresh contemporary look. Collectif Clothing just launched a whole new line called Bright & Beautiful (B & B), inspired by the 60’s and 70s. Their designs pull from the iconic prints and silhouettes of both decades where we can expect to see shorter hemlines (mini skirts) with some 70’s flare, to create styles for the modern day fashionistas. The collection is being introduced in their Fall/Winter release, but luckily for us there were a couple designs that came a bit sooner. With my love of birds and the colour yellow, the B&B Bird Print Flared Dress was a fine choice.

Available in sizes UK 8-18 ~ MSRP £42

IMG_5886 Although the B & B Collection is brand new, we know Collectif’s sizing should be carried over into these designs as well. I went with my usual size Small (10UK) with my measurements being bust 36″, waist 27″. The fit was excellent overall, a little roomy in the waist which was easy to fix by adding a belt and shortening the adjustable straps. The Bird Print Dress features a soft sweetheart neckline with adjustable spaghetti straps, matching faux buttons and short flared skirt (19″ long). Needless to say, I was hesitant with such a short hemline as I never wear any skirts that fall above the knees and I am only 5′-4″ tall. My reservations were quickly diminished when I saw how cute and fun it truly was, something different from my usual go to. The Bird Print Dress is made polyester and has a double layer of fabric which drapes gracefully over the body.

IMG_5878Sometimes we have to take the plunge to try new things to fully discover our personal sense of style. Although I won’t be giving up my 1950s circle skirts for minis, the B & B Collection has opened a new door in the world of vintage reproduction fashion. The Bird Print Dress is truly a delight as it’s perfect to throw on when you’re heading out for errands or just enjoying a day of summer. The adorable little birds are what drew me to this dress in the first place, they hold a special place in my heart and truly bring a personal sense of joy when I see them. To my surprise, my husband claimed this was one of his favorite dresses to date that we photographed for the blog.

IMG_5899 IMG_5890With the waist being a little loose, I opted to add the Collectif Peggie Pu Belt in blue to give a pop of colour to accent the bird print. The Bird Print Dress can be dressed up or down based, simply by pairing it with flats or heels depending on the occasion. I chose my Biance Latte heels from B.A.I.T to elongate my legs. For a more office friendly look, add a cropped cardigan in contrasting shade to again play up the whimsy of the print.

IMG_5882Collectif has enticed us with a couple fabulous early releases to the new Bright & Beautiful line, which has only made us more excited for the upcoming full Fall/Winter Collection. This will likely bring in a new generation of young women who have yet to discover the timeless designs from decades past.
