Swing vs Wiggle: A Battle No More

Among the pinup fashion world, there are two very distinctive categories of dress styles: Swing vs Wiggle. Many of us have our preferential go to for personal comfort but what about the void that exists when a particular design is only available in one or the other? So many times we hear women say “but that would so good in a swing skirt”, or “I would love to see that in a sexy wiggle”, or “I wish it had longer sleeves”. Fortunately for all of us, Pinup Girl Clothing heard the inner desires of their customers and has introduced a whole new collection based on one of their bestselling designs, the Erin! Originally designed as a curve hugging wiggle dress with cap sleeves…the Erin has now been reinvented in a swing skirt and with a variety of sleeves lengths to please us all. Desperate for more dresses suitable for the cooler weather that is now upon us; I jumped at the Erin Swing Dress in Three-Quarter Sleeves in Emerald Green.

Available in sizes XS-4X in a variety of colorways ~ MSRP $108USD

IMG_6496Retailers like Pinup Girl Clothing try to take the guess work out of finding the right size and provide unique sizing charts for each style and colorway. Based on my measurements (bust 36” waist 26/27”), I fell perfectly in line with the size small. If you happen to be in between sizes, there is a generous amount of stretch in the bengaline fabric and I would recommend sizing down if you desire a more snug fit. When the Erin Swing Dress arrived, I was delighted on how well it fit and flattered my body. Those of you that always need a little more room in the sleeves…the Erin sleeves are very generously cut and have loads of stretch as well. I actually found them to be a bit loose on my arms but still super comfortable. The Erin Swing Dress features a fabulous gathered cross over style bust, three-quarter length sleeves, a flattering swing skirt with hidden pockets, a matching grommet belt and back zipper closure. If you happen to size down in the waist, I would caution that the belts are a tad on the small side. At 5’-4” tall, the skirt falls a few inches below the knees.

IMG_6524 IMG_6519As a huge fan of the original Erin, I was beyond thrilled with the release of the new swing skirt with three-quarter sleeves! I find myself constantly gravitating towards swing skirts as they are easy to throw on for work and require no extra undergarments. Made from PUG’s signature stretchy bengaline fabric, the Erin Swing Dress is definitely ideal for the cooler seasons since there is a considerate amount of weight to the garment. The swing skirt drapes beautifully and I really love that the fabric does not crease nearly as much as cotton. For those of you concerned with the deep plunging neckline, I found there to be ample coverage and not nearly as revealing like the original Erin Wiggle. A simple and easy alternative, try adding a little lace camisole in a contrasting colour for extra coverage. The emerald green is an absolutely stunning warm jewel tone, definitely a winner for us redheads.

IMG_6531The Erin Swing Dress is a fabulous staple that can be accessorized to go from day to evening glam. When it comes to my day look at the office, I keep things simple by adding a cute little novelty brooch and a comfy pair of round toe pumps. For evening, I add some dramatic costume jewelry and switch up to some sexy high heel pumps. The Erin Swing Dress is one of those particular designs that I believe look best without a petticoat simply because the bengaline drapes perfectly and has enough structure to stand alone.

IMG_6528 IMG_6506Pinup Girl Clothing has given us so many choices with the newly redesigned Erin Dress, sure to accentuate every body type and shape. Whether you are devoted to wiggle skirts or swing skirts, you may be surprised to find they are both great must-have staples to add in your closet. Even better yet, the Erin Dress is going to make you look fabulous without breaking your wallet since they are all reasonably priced around $100. What better way to start planning your Black Friday shopping by adding the Erin to your PUG wish list?!? 😉

All A-flutter

One of my current guilty pleasures is Instagram…I find it fascinating to follow inspirational people and discovering new unique brands. Although I am not one of the most active bloggers for posting photos multiple times a day, I do enjoy sharing happy little moments with my followers and I always take great pleasure in reading all your comments. This is exactly how I very recently discovered a fabulous new British clothing line, Zoe Vine Ltd. Their companion vision “…to produce garments with an emphasis on quality, cut, fabric and finish. And to provide women with affordable designs that create shapely silhouettes with a vintage flair, emulating a timeless sense of romance and glamour currently absent from high street brands” truly resonates with what we all seek and love about vintage reproduction fashions. With the cooler autumn temperatures now upon us, I felt immediately drawn to the graceful Millie in Hummingbird print.

Available in sizes S(10)-XL(16) ~ MSRP £85

IMG_6341 IMG_6363When trying any new brand of clothing, I tend to get a little nervous with sizing as you never really know how accurate the size charts are until your order arrives. Based on my measurements (bust 36″, waist 26-27″), I fell in between size Small and Medium. Knowing that if I sized up the waist would be absolutely too big and since the Millie has an open back design, I took a calculated risk of sizing down to a Small.  When my order arrived from Zoe Vine Ltd, I was pleasantly surprised with the lovely gift box wrapping; it’s the extra little details that make a company truly stand out. The Millie Dress fits splendidly, the bust was not too small at all and I was so thrilled that the shoulder width was spot on. There’s only one very minor adjustment needed due to my short torso, the back puckers slightly but it is an easy fix that will cost next to nothing to have a flawless fit. The Millie Dress features a jawdropping low back, a classic high boat neckline with gathers under the bust, a lined bodice, shoulder length sleeves, a fitted waist with pleated full skirt and back zipper. The open back can be a bit tricky to find the right undergarments. In the depth of my lingerie drawer, I found a convertible strap that adapts a regular bra into a deep plunge for low back styles. It wasn’t quite low enough but I was able to make it work with some minor readjustments. An easy fabulous alternative is adding a lace camisole to accent the open back design. At 5′-4″ tall, the full skirt falls just below the knees.

IMG_6575The Millie Dress is not only a timeless classic, it is incredibly well constructed! The gorgeous hummingbird pattern is so rich and printed on very high quality thick cotton. I am genuinely impressed that the quality goes right through from the design, to the fabric, to how well the garment fits on the body. The Millie Dress is ideal for casual to formal occasions and also a great style for spring, summer or fall due to the versatile half sleeves. The skirt deep pleating creates the right amount of fullness and flare without the need to add a petticoat. I absolutely adore how the Millie is such a classic practical dress that I will wear over and over throughout the seasons.

IMG_6563Oddly enough, when I accessorized the Millie Dress…I added different options all depending on how my hair was styled. When my hair was down, I felt less was better and simply paired it with some frilly nude pumps. In contrast with my hair pulled back, I felt the Millie needed more accents like some blue/green confetti earrings, pearls with rhinestone bracelet and my go to basic nude pumps. In the warmer months, I would definitely pair the Millie with open toe sandals in blues or greens to pull out the beautiful colours in the hummingbird print.

IMG_6559 IMG_6556Luckily for all of us, social media is a wonderful network that brings us all together and introduces us to fabulous new companies like Zoe Vine Ltd. They have been in the industry since 2013 and quickly becoming a brand to watch…delivering high quality designs at competitive prices. With the Millie becoming a new personal favorite, I now have my eye on the Olivia Dress in adorable Palm Beach print!

Tantalizing Rose Sorbet

Do you ever fancy something that you just seem to always seem talk yourself out of buying? Constantly saying to yourself “not right now”, “it is too expensive”, “wait for a really good sale”, “but don’t you want x more?”…the adverse reasons that repeatedly arise give you the feeling that the timing is never quite right. Sometimes that inner struggle can go on for months or even years but no matter, your heart still desires it after all this time. Until one day…all objections go out the window when online retailers like The Sugar Shack Boutique come along, offering fabulous designer clothing at incredibly low prices. Finally…there were no more valid reasons why I should not buy the Bernie Dexter Cheryl in Sorbet Dress any longer.

Available in sizes XS-2X ~ MSRP $156 (Sugar Shack Sale Price $108)

IMG_6461It had been quite some time since I purchased any Bernie Dexter designs but I did recall that sizing was a rather inconsistent with the universal size chart. With feedback from my fellow pinup fashionistas and online reviews, I decided to risk ordering a size small despite my bust (36″) being 2″ larger than the recommended measurements. The medium would have been undoubtedly too big in the waist since I measure 26-27″. Now the moment of truth…did the size gamble pay off? I would have to say yes but admit that the bust is on the snug side but not uncomfortably so. The waist fits perfectly and with the right non push up bra, the small was effectively the right choice. The Cheryl Dress features wide capped sleeves with a well constructed bodice that includes boning, fitted waist with full skirt, a contrasting cherry red vinyl belt and back zipper closure. At 5′-4″ tall, the skirt falls a couple inches below the knees.

IMG_6455 IMG_6464The Cheryl Dress in Sorbet caught my eye many moons ago because of my love of bold rose prints. The softness of the colour combinations is absolutely mesmerizing and elegant. I am kicking myself for waiting so long now, it’s truly even more spectacular than I ever imagined. The extra wide straps are a nice design element, a refreshing change to what is currently available when it comes to better shoulder coverage. Even more notable to mention is how well the bust is designed and constructed. The boning is well placed to provide the right shape with firm support and is not likely to warp. Made from a lightweight cotton, ideal for those warmer summer days. To top it off, there’s pockets!

IMG_6478We all love when belts are included with the dress, making it that much easier to complete the ensemble. Taking a cue from the designer, it was a no brainer to accessorize using the bright cherry to make the rose sorbet print pop. I paired the Cheryl Dress with some small red rose cabochon earrings, my go to cherry Madden Girl pumps, finished off with a fluffy petticoat by Hell Bunny. As many of you know, I am not much of a fan of petticoats but in this case, the two go amazingly together.

IMG_6479 IMG_6468If it weren’t for The Sugar Shack Boutique, I would have likely found many more excuses not to take the plunge to buy the Cheryl Dress by Bernie Dexter and sincerely regretted every moment that I waited. Fortunately for all of you, The Sugar Shack Boutique is currently hosting a “Spooktacular Sale” until October 24th! All Bernie Dexter dresses are 20% off the listed price ($135), free domestic shipping and discounted International Shipping as well. Make sure to check them out now, these sales only happen for a very limited time!

The Penny-Wise Fashionistas

With how tough the economy is these days, it’s a no brainer that we want our hard earned dollar to stretch as far as possible while not sacrificing our luxuries like gorgeous pinup clothing. We all love a good sale but sometimes timing can be a little of the essence. Luckily for us, there are great online retailers like Daddy O’s that offer fabulous named brand clothing like Stop Staring at unremarkably low prices. The gorgeous Blue Nova Dress retails for $197, and is now available at Daddy O’s for an everyday bargain of $119.95!

Available in sizes XS-1X ~ MSRP $119.95 (Daddy O’s)

IMG_6394With Stop Staring sizing, I find it usually comes down to whether or not there’s any stretch to the fabric since they are designed to be figure hugging. Seeing as the Nova Dress is made from a non-stretch material, I chose to size up to a Medium to accommodate my larger hips (my measurements are 36-26-39). Not surprising, the waist was a little big since it’s designed to fit up to 28” and will need to be taken in but I did find the hips to be cut a little more generously than usual. In hindsight, I think the size Small would have fit after all but I still feel the Medium looks wonderful. The Nova Dress features the signature Stop Staring wrap twist bust, small cap sleeves, figure flattering side pleating, a sexy rear kick pleat and back zipper. The gorgeous deep blue with contrasting red and light blue floral print is opulent and absolutely breathtaking. At 5’-4” tall, the skirt falls a few inches below the knees.

IMG_6388 IMG_6409The Nova Dress was one of those beauties that grew on me the more I saw it on others. The richness of the deep blue with bold floral print is much more elegant in person; it seems various lighting doesn’t quite capture its beauty adequately. Luckily the well placed side pleating helps conceal those trouble areas perfectly. I was impressed with the thickness and weight of the fabric, perfect to accent your curves and conceal any undergarments that may lie beneath. The cap sleeves seemed to be cut a little on the larger side than usual; I might tack them in a little to fit more snugly. The Nova Dress is without question a classic style ideal for almost any occasion and versatile to transition from day to evening.

IMG_6406 IMG_6396As a big fan of large bold prints, I often choose to keep my accessories basic in order to let the dress do all of the talking. With the Nova Dress, I did just that…pairing it with my Cherry red Madden Girl Pumps and nothing else. It was pure coincidence that my bright red hair happened to compliment it as well. If you need a little help with faking a flawless hourglass silhouette, I highly recommend the Rago 1294 Girdle or High Waist shorts.

IMG_6402Stop Staring is known for delivering classic bombshell designs sure to knock them dead and the Nova Dress is no exception! Fortunately for us fashionistas’ on a budget, there are wonderful retailers like Daddy O’s that offer a great selection of name brand designs at affordable regular low prices. Make sure to follow them on social media as they also offer site wide sales for bonus savings to make your dollar stretch even further!
