Tartan is The New Polka Dot

As promised, 2016 will bring many new and exciting brands never before showcased here at Pin Up Persuasion. I have been working hard behind the scenes and enjoying every minute of it. Often times these fabulous designers have been around for many years but are simply lesser known in different parts of the world. We are so fortunate that the realm of online shopping has no limits and we can procure vintage inspired fashions from around the globe. Some of you may have noticed that the United Kingdom is home to many vintage reproduction designers and a force to be reckoned with. They are taking North America by storm and I know without a doubt that Miss Fortune will be no exception! Did you know Miss Fortune has been around for over a decade designing versatile pinup and rockabilly fashions? As a longtime fan of their lovely jumpers, I was so delighted to add the Miss Fortune Carrie Swing Dress in Tartan to my collection.

Available in sizes XS-2X ~ MSRP £57.98

IMG_7046 - Version 3 IMG_7042We all know how daunting it can be to shop with unfamiliar brands as determining proper sizing is always a factor. After reviewing the Miss Fortune size charts, I knew the size Medium would be way too big based on my measurements (bust 36” waist 26/27”), therefore the only option was sizing down to a Small despite exceeding the maximum bust size by 2”. When the Carrie Swing Dress made its arrival, I was taken back by the superior design quality and the sheer beauty of the tartan print. I was utterly thrilled that the size Small fit wonderfully; there was ample room to accommodate my bust and the off the shoulder sleeves sat perfectly on my petite frame. The Carrie Swing Dress features a classic off the shoulder design with contrasting purple collar and elastic straps, short sleeves, a full circle skirt, back zipper closure and also includes a black elastic belt. The breathtaking tartan print has the most spectacular shimmering purple lurex thread throughout, I have never been so infatuated with a textile in my life. At 5’-4” tall, the skirt falls a couple inches below the knees.

IMG_7017 IMG_7039Believe it or not, the Carrie Swing Dress is the very first tartan print in my pinup collection and it has certainly set the bar high. The uniqueness of the Carrie Swing Dress design is undoubtedly striking, but is also very figure flattering and so comfortable. I really love the fact that the elastic straps allows you to wear your regular undergarments and creates a lovely accent while being functional to keep the off the shoulder look perfectly in place. There’s no fussing or adjustments to be had. The black belt cinches in your waist nicely, yet it allows for freedom of movement due to the practical elastic design. One thing I remarked immediately was the substantial weight of the tartan fabric; the quality is remarkable for the affordable price point. The Carrie Swing Dress is completely different than any style I have ever tried over the years and I can honestly say that there is something truly magical in the way it makes me feel that I never want to take it off.

IMG_7020 IMG_7021The deep purple plums are slowly creeping their way into my closet, as the rich jeweled tones are quite complimentary to redheads. I feel that the Carrie Swing Dress is very much a standalone statement piece that I refrained from using any accessories, simply pairing it with my staple black round toe pumps and a black petticoat for a little volume to accentuate the full circle skirt beautifully. The entire look could not be complete without a nice shade of plum lipstick to compliment.

IMG_7029 IMG_7025It is easy to see that although the Miss Fortune Collection is smaller in scale than most, they truly put everything into their designs to ensure superior quality and fit. With over 10 years of experience in the industry, they fashion beautiful distinctive designs that work for the modern day vintage lovers. Luckily for all of you, Miss Fortune is giving away a £40 Gift Card for our 4th Anniversary Giveaway Bash going on now until January 31st! –>CLICK HERE to enter now!

Winter Blooms

With many of us now in hibernation for the long cold winter season, desperate for any glimpse of spring we find ourselves planning ahead and scooping up beautiful frocks during the end of season clearance sales. It was utter pandemonium when Collectif Clothing announced their semi-annual 50% off Sale…but can you really blame us for wanting pretty clothes at such incredible prices? With oodles of bright summery florals in my closet, I felt the need to add some winter inspired blooms to complete my collection. From the moment I saw the Maria Woodland Bloom Swing Dress, I knew it was destined to be mine.

Available in sizes 6-22UK ~ MSRP £60 Sale £45

IMG_6976 IMG_6966After sharing several reviews of my many dresses from Collectif, I always seemed to find the waist to be rather loose on the size 10UK(Small) and simply belted them to fit. This time I decided to take a little gamble going down to a size 8UK(extra-small) based on my current measurements being nearly on par with the size chart (bust 36, waist 26/27). This risky decision paid off wonderfully as the Maria Dress fit me like a glove, no longer was there any gaping in the waist. I would venture to say that the Maria Dress fits accurately based on the size chart but be mindful there is no stretch in the fabric. For the ladies with a short torso like myself, you may find that the shoulders need to be taken up slightly to better suit our proportions. The Maria Dress features a gorgeous crossover-faux-wrap bust, short sleeves with full flared skirt and deep V detail with back zipper closure. What makes the Maria truly spectacular is the rich all over winter floral print fabric; this isn’t grandmas’ old sofa we’re talking about. At 5′-4″ tall, the flared skirt falls mid calf…definitely ideal for the taller gals.

IMG_6997 IMG_6965The Maria Woodland Bloom Swing Dress seemed to call to me every time I was browsing the Collectif website. I contemplated for some time that I should go with the Maria Autumns Leaves Swing Dress for something a little different than floral; maybe it was fate trying to intervene as I always found myself pinning over the rich Woodland Bloom print tirelessly. Lesson learned…we should never doubt our instincts as they will never steer us a stray. There is no doubt in my mind now that the opulent winter blooms was the best choice of the two prints. The Maria Dress design is quite simple yet classic, perfect for any occasion. Some may shy away from short sleeves due to comfort but these are not constricting at all, I can easily lift my arms up overhead with ease. The crossover-faux-wrap bust can be a bit boobilicious depending on the type of bra worn underneath, avoid push-up style bras for a more conservative decolletage.

IMG_6991 IMG_6970From the moment I put on the Maria Dress, I knew it had to be paired with my vintage pearl necklace and Collectif Pearl Bracelet with Diamante Bow. Just recently I spotted some of the cutest shoes at Collectif by Lulu Hun; it was like a match made in heaven when I came across the fabulous Amelia Mid Wedges to go with the rich burgundy in the Woodland Bloom. With a little online research, I found out that a 7US converted to 5UK. The sizing worked out quite well, they were a bit wide for my narrow feet but nothing an insole can’t fix. As a gal that can’t wear high heels, these wedges are wonderful to give me a little extra height without the sore feet to go along with it. Luckily I had the perfect colour belt to coordinate with my shoes and added a petticoat to complete the whole ensemble.

LuluHunCan winter be done already so we be rid of bulky snow boots & coats and enjoy wearing all of our beautiful frocks again? In the meantime while we wait, we can enjoy treating ourselves to the fabulous end of season sale going on now at Collectif Clothing! You can scoop up deals on the stunning Maria Woodland Bloom Swing Dress along with many other styles, but don’t wait too long as sizes are quickly selling out!

Paramount Corset Heritage

How often do you see a family owned and operated company that has been in the fashion business for over a 100 years and still one of the leaders in their craft? Simply, it is almost unheard of today and absolutely remarkable. Vollers Corsets began in 1899, when Harry & Nelly Voller established a shop and factory in Portsmouth, England. In the early 1900’s, corsets fell out of style as they were seen as a sign of suppression and as a result the second generation of Vollers began fabricating girdles. For four decades, they were the leaders in their new found craft, but the demand for nipped in waists returned in the early 1950’s. Fortunately for all of us, the next generation of Vollers went back to their origins fabricating high quality handcrafted corsets and still do to this present day. It is with great pleasure and honor to feature the Vollers Waist Hugger – Waist Training Corset in Black Spot Brocade.

Available in sizes 18-38 in black, white, & red ~ MSRP £160.00

IMG_7072For those of you who already own a corset, I would definitely recommend to stay with the same sizing when it comes to Vollers. If you are in the market to make your first corset purchase, it is best to consult the super helpful Vollers Sizing Guide (VIEW HERE) to determine the appropriate size. If your waist measurement is in between two sizes like me (waist 26″-27″), I recommend going down to the smaller size for more waist reduction. In this particular case, I selected my regular corset size 22. When my Vollers Corset arrived, I was quite impressed as it was hand wrapped in a lovely black presentation box; it is the small attention to detail that truly makes your purchase feel extra special. The Waist Hugger Corset is one of Vollers shorter styles which is ideal for my short torso as it measures only 9″ in length on the front/back and 8″ on the sides. Normally I struggle with off the rack corsets due to my narrow rib cage and wide hips but fortunately the Vollers Corset fit was spot on for my hourglass shape. The Waist Hugger Corset features a lovely black dot brocade fabric, 21 steel bones ideal for waist training, cotton twill lining, a wide modesty panel and durably nylon laces. Now if you are new to corsets, the LAST thing you want to do it put on your corset and lace it super tight the first time you wear it. This will not only hurt you, it will also damage the corset. To avoid this, you must begin by breaking in your new corset which is referred to as “corset seasoning”. This seasoning process allows the corset to mold to your body and permits you to get accustomed to wearing one as well. Start by wearing your corset snug (not tight) for short intervals of up to 2hrs a day and make sure to do so daily for at least week to properly season your corset.

IMG_7061 IMG_7060Now I must fess up to the fact that I was in awe for quite a while just holding the Vollers Corset in my hands. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be so fortunate to own a piece with such rich history seeing as the company has been making corsets for over a Century. As many of you know, I do not waist train and only wear corset occasionally so it took me a little time to get back into tight lacing again. The Vollers Waist Hugger Corset is so beautifully constructed and has a truly classic figure enhancing design. The black spot brocade fabric is elegant and one of the slimmest corsets I have ever worn. There was just something unique in the way it molded to my body seamlessly and did not feel like I was wearing a bulky steel boned corset. My waist was dramatically reduced with ease and comfort. This corset would be ideal to wear under your clothing seamlessly to create that jaw dropping tiny waist. The Waist Hugger Corset is actually designed for waist training and would be an excellent quality corset to invest in for beginners.

IMG_7051The wonderful aspect of corsets is that they can be worn under and over your clothing depending on the look you wish to achieve. I loved the way the Waist Hugger Corset paired wonderfully with a classic office chic look. This ensemble was achieved with the Pinup Girl Clothing Sabrina top, a simple grey pencil skirt and my go-to black round toe pumps. For every day corset wearing, I would not tight lace as seen here.

IMG_7068 IMG_7064It is truly magnificent to see a company with such rich heritage that has stood the test of time and continued to flourish through each era of fashion for more than eleven decades and counting. If you are looking for a quality corset that will last you a lifetime (Vollers offers a lifetime guarantee on all their corsets), you will not be disappointed!

A Fusion of Two Eras

It is quite exciting to bring you the first review for 2016…something a little different from our customary era of the 1950’s. Lately I have been heavily influenced by my best friend Amber’s love of 1940’s fashion and finding myself gravitating towards dresses of this timeless period. Designs were heavily impacted by the material restrictions in the production of clothing imposed by the government; hemlines rose, less fabric meant lean styles, with narrow hip lines and slim all over appearance. Although we are not faced with the same struggles in this generation, we can truly appreciate the men and women who created a new age in fashion trends by the hardships they endured. More and more we are seeing vintage reproduction designers like Heart of Haute embracing diverse decades and bringing us fabulous yet functional designs like the Manhattan Dress.

Available in sizes XS-3X in burgundy, navy & black ~ MSRP $120

IMG_6857With Heart of Haute sizing, you can generally follow the size chart to find the proper fit. If you are like me and in between sizes, it is best to decide by how fitted you prefer your clothing to be; in my case I prefer mine to be snug all over therefore I go with a size Small since my bust measurement 36″ is only slightly larger than the max 35″. To my surprise, the waist is quite roomy but thankfully the Manhattan Dress has built in back ties to nip in the waist seamlessly. The Manhattan Dress features elegant pleated collar than transitions into an empire waistline with matching front button detail, puffed cap sleeves, and flared skirt. The material is one of my favorite fabrics often used by HOH, it drapes beautifully and accentuates the body flawlessly. Since the material is 100% polyester, it doesn’t crease nearly as much as cotton and easy to freshen up with a quick pass of a steamer. At 5′-4″ tall, the skirt falls just below the knees.

IMG_6870 IMG_6861When I first tried the Manhattan Dress, I wasn’t quite sure if this style was right for me. We all know Doris Mayday can rock any dress like nobody’s business but I didn’t feel the same excitement about it on me since this style was much different than what I normally wear. Sometimes it is best to put the item aside and go back to it later with an open mind. This is exactly what I did with the Manhattan Dress and all those doubts quickly dissipated. Normally I shy away from styles with puffed cap sleeves as they seem to overwhelm my petite frame but the intricate pleated collar really pulls everything together. The back ties are great to adjust how much to nip in the waste yet not constricting like a belt. I do love the functional button front detail, sometimes we just want to get away from bulky zippers and benefit from a seamless look in the back as well.

IMG_6862There is definitely something about the Manhattan Dress that makes it stand alone therefore I wouldn’t accessorize very much or at all for that matter. A simple bracelet or small vintage earrings would pair nicely for a more formal classic look. By pure coincidence, I had the perfect pair of matching shoes in my closet…the Pompeii from Miss L Fire. Although I am very guilty of wearing my hair up on a daily basis, I found that a vintage hairstyle with waves was necessary to create a polished look.

IMG_6866 IMG_6878The Manhattan Dress is a graceful fusion of two classic eras of fashion and perfect for the modern day pinup. Going out of your comfort zone might not always be a smooth process initially but I can honestly say that you won’t regret expanding your wardrobe to include a little versatility. With a new year before us, I hope to bring you more exciting styles, eras, brands and more!signature2
