Pinup Fashion For All Generations ~ Part Three: Sixties

What a better way to finish off the year with the final installment of “Pinup Fashion For All Generations”. Each lovely dame has shared how they embody their love of vintage fashion everyday. They demonstrate how to transcend the pressures of the media to dress or act a certain way depending on your age. Today’s lovely dame is such an inspiration in our pinup community and I couldn’t be more honored to have her guest post for Pin Up Persuasion. We can only dream of looking this fabulous when we are in our Golden Years!

Ingrid “Pinup Granny”

“How to pinup as a granny

As a child of the fifties PUG is memory lane for me. I still remember what a 1958 Cadillac looked like when it was brand new. I’m a 64-yo granny and live with my husband in Helsingborg, a small seaside town in Sweden. We have a house, two cats and a very happy life. Hubby works from home with tech support and I play housewife.  I totally blame Nigella Lawson for my PUG addiction. I love her; have almost all her cookery books and anyone who has seen the iconic photo of her wearing a red wiggle dress know what I’m talking about. That dress got me looking and I found a few sites on the net.

What I love most about the designs from Pinupgirl Clothing is the quality and versatility. PUG offer garments that are casual, work appropriate, elegant, edgy or outright sexy af. Whatever I want to do and wherever I plan to go there is always something fit for the occasion. As a retiree I usually do house and garden work in the morning. In summer that means casual shorts and a top. After that I shower and put on something nice like the LB high-waisted shorts or a dress. I have a few skirts, but I’m not a skirt girl. Dresses and pants feel more comfortable.

The PUG fan page on Facebook is very encouraging and a great source of inspiration. I never thought I’d dare to wear a wiggle dress or shorts in public, but now I do and feel fabulous. I was on the fence with the Jenny dress for a long time, but the Paris Jenny was a hit and is now one of my favourite summer dresses. PUG brings sunshine to my golden years.”

There are very few fashion communities that embrace women of all ages, shapes and sizes like our pinup family. I say “family” as that is what we truly are. There is so much love, respect and support among women from around the globe, all brought together by their passion for vintage fashion. Let us end 2016 celebrating our incredible pinup family! Don’t forget the past, EMBRACE it! Thank you all for your continued support and see you in 2017!!! Happy New Year!!! ❤

Darling Looks On A Budget

Now that Christmas is over, many of us are feeling it most in our wallets. It is the season of giving but who isn’t tempted to treat themselves as well? When money is a little tight, there are plenty of options to find affordable clothing while not sacrificing your style. Dolly and Dotty offer great pinup frocks whether you are looking to start your pinup wardrobe or simply add a few versatile pieces that won’t break your bank account.

Mary Casual Vintage Inspired Day Dress in Black Birds £29.99

Although I instinctively gravitate towards 50’s swing dresses, the Mary Day Dress slim silhouette really peeked my fancy to try something a little different. Based on my measurements (Bust 36, waist 28, hips 41), the size 10UK was a perfect fit. The Mary Day Dress is cut in a straight shift pattern which creates a very casual flowing fit. Do not let this simple day dress fool you, the adorable shirt style collar with peek-a-boo bust cut out make it a fabulous flirty and fun design. The subtle black bird print is classic and versatile.

Seeing as we’re now in the cold winter months, it was essential to transition the Mary Day Dress into an ensemble suitable for the season. Being budget conscious, I opted to shop my closet for separates to achieve this task. One of my favorite staples are cropped cardigans, they pair fabulously with almost any outfit. In this case, I found the Sweet Sweater in black by Heart of Haute was a great match with the Mary Day Dress since it accentuated the lovely peek-a-boo cut out and neckline perfectly. This classic casual look was finished off with the Gabriella Rocha Ginger Black mary-janes.

img_8630 img_8643 img_8641Darlene Retro Full Circle Swing Dress in Beige/Dark Green £39.99

Now some of you may recall seeing the Darlene Swing Dress in mint and coral on the blog some months back. As I mentioned then, I was lusting over the beige/green colourway but it was sadly out sold out in my size. After waiting patiently for the restock, I opted to size down to an 8UK since I found the 10UK ran big in this particular style. The smaller size fit wonderfully and looked much more figure flattering. The Darlene Swing Dress features a lovely off the shoulder boat neck with button accents, short sleeves with contrasting cuffs, a wide style waistband to nip in the waist and flared swing skirt.

img_8714 img_8698 img_8708What I adore the most about the Darlene Swing Dress is that the design stands alone and requires little effort. What does that mean? Well, just throw on the Darlene Dress with some cute basic Mary Janes and you’re ready to go! There’s no need to hunt down a belt or a cardigan, no muss no fuss. A classic style that can go from day to evening and available in a variety of colour combinations as well.

img_8702 img_8712 img_8711It is no secret that the vintage reproduction clothing is a financial investment but there are definitely many options for those who are looking to build their wardrobe on a tight budget. Dolly and Dotty not only offer affordable designs, they also have incredible sales! I was blown away to find they had a site wide 50% off sale around Black Friday, so I recommend signing up for their newsletter to not miss out!

A Kitschy Christmas

It is mind boggling to think Christmas is less than a week away, where did the year go? Whether you celebrate the holidays surrounded by large families or a few of your closest loved ones, tis’ the season to cherish those special moments together. The tree is up, presents wrapped, lots of white fluffy snow on the ground, classic festive melodies fill the air, and now it is time to plan our holiday outfits! Of course, no retro Christmas would be complete without lots of vintage kitsch themed decor. Mix that with a little pinup and you will be looking splendid in the Limited Edition Kitschy Christmas Novelty Print Circle Skirt by The Oblong Box Shop.

Available in sizes S-3x ~ MSRP $120.00

img_88162We are no strangers to the fabulousness and originality of The Oblong Box Shop novelty circle skirts. Each season we can count on spectacular new themes and designs to capture our hearts. This holiday season, The Oblong Box Shop went to Grandma’s house for a visit and brought back oodles of vintage charm with the Kitschy Christmas Novelty Print Circle Skirt. Who doesn’t remember the tacky-cute ceramic light up trees and ornaments that looked like they had been around since the 1950’s? We probably never realized how those simple festive traditions would be cherished years later when those loved ones are no longer with us.

img_8809 img_8778The Oblong Box Shop circle skirts are made from 4 yards of 100% Polyester Fabric, known to showcase the vibrant novelty prints beautifully and prevent wrinkling. Since there is no stretch, make sure to follow the size charts carefully and you can easily move the button on the waistband if you need it to fit a little smaller. I opted to go with a size Medium this time with my 28″ waist and simply adjusted the button. All sizes measure 26″ in length and come with a very handy hidden right side pocket.

img_8789 img_8807What I love the most is the array of colours in the kitschy Christmas print allowing one to create a multitude of looks to suit their personal style. It was really hard to choose what ensemble to showcase as I spent a solid half hour mixing and matching with various tops in my wardrobe. In the end, I felt the mustard cropped cardigan paired with the Erstwilder Gingerbread Man brooch and teal belt captured the kitschy Christmas spirit wonderfully. Plus it would work well for our more casual family gathering.

img_8784 img_8812The Kitschy Christmas Novelty Print Circle Skirt brings us back in time with loved ones gathering for the holidays’ at Grandma’s house and unbeknownst to them creating memories to cherish for years to come. Now we can bring back old traditions to reminiscence with the new generations. There you will receive exclusive sneak peeks of upcoming new designs and special sales just for members. 😀

A Time Capsule Is Opened

This season, I am really focusing on finding new ways to incorporate vintage fashion year round and no longer taking the easy way out. We must challenge ourselves to break out of old habits and discover classic styles that we may of never considered before. It is often said that vintage fashion is very “dressy” with very few “casual” options but that does not mean casual options do not exist, they are simply more rare to come by. Fortunately there are a very select group of designers like Atomic Swag, who are preserving the integrity of the past and reproducing authentic designs that we could only dream of owning today. Although it may take them years to reproduce these designs, they are dedicated to recreating nothing short of vintage purity. We all know good things are worth waiting for and the Atomic Swag Crazy Rock N Rock Sweater is out-of-this-world impressive.

Available in sizes S-XL ~ MSRP $89.99

img_8743Although I own several Atomic Swag tshirts, I had a feeling the sizing for the knit sweaters might run a little differently so I decided to consult their team for guidance. Based on my measurement (bust 36″, waist 28″) they recommended the size Medium as these sweaters are designed to be worn fitted, not loose or baggy. The fit was good, the knit hugged me in all the right places and the length was perfect with high waist jeans but I likely could have stuck with my usual size Small. The Crazy Rock N Rock Sweater features the most delightful music note design accented with a rich red ribbing along the cuffs, neckline and hem, with long sleeves and cropped length designed for high waist bottoms. Authentic to the 1950’s, the music notes are knitted right into the sweater pattern itself and is made from a incredibly soft knit yarn.

img_8720 img_8724Atomic Swag has done the impossible, they have gone back in time and brought the Crazy Rock N Rock Sweater to modern day. For those of you who are unfamiliar with vintage, these types of sweaters are incredibly rare and often sell for upwards of $300-500 if you are fortunate to find one in fair condition. It is unbelievable how Atomic Swag worked so long and hard to reproduce these sweaters true to their era meanwhile keeping the price tag very affordable for their customers. In all of my years wearing vintage and reproduction, I have never found casual clothing that come close to the quality of Crazy Rock N Rock Sweater. The craftsmanship is impeccable and so ridiculously comfortable!!! The soft cream accented with the rich red and black make this a great staple piece in any wardrobe.

img_8717The Crazy Rock N Rock Sweater is versatile to pair with a variety of high waist bottoms; whether it be jeans, cigarette pants or a sexy pencil skirt…you can mix and match endless possibilities. I personally keep accessories simple with casual styles and use this opportunity to pair colourful flats for a cute comfortable look.

img_8730 img_8729No longer do we have to lust over what can’t be, Atomic Swag has found their very own time capsule to recreate the Crazy Rock N Rock Sweater. Just like their vintage counterparts, these sweaters are limited releases and will never be restocked so grab them while you still can!
