Curlettes vs Foam Rollers

It has been a little under two years now since I learned how to wet set my hair with foam rollers by my best friend Amber. Evidently, I am far from an expert but with the basics in hand I have slowly improved over time. The one thing that has remained the same, foam rollers are very uncomfortable to sleep in overnight. We suck it up in the name of beauty but what if we did not have to? Several months ago I heard one of my online friends Celeste had started her own business, Curlettes: The Comfy Curls for Vintage Girls. Immediately I reached out to her asking if I could give them a try and write about them on the blog. The wonderful gal that she is, Celeste was super excited to share her handmade curlers with the readers of Pin Up Persuasion. Now I must apologize to her and all of you for taking so darn long to write about Curlettes, I waited until I was feeling well again to experiment with a new product to make sure I got it just right.

Medium Curlettes & Jane Carter’s Wrap & Roll foam.

To be completely honest, I was a little skeptical of trying a new technique to setting my hair as I had only ever worked with foam rollers and I was petrified it was going to be a complete failure. When I use foam rollers, I always find that they not only pinch when you sleep on them but the smaller ones towards the bottom tend to flatten out. But, they allowed my hair to dry completely overnight and created a tight overall curl that held up through a tough brush out. Since I have a lot of hair, I knew the pack of 14 Medium Curlettes wouldn’t be quite enough so I had to use a couple large foam rollers on the top and small ones at the end.

Curlettes wet set complete.

With my Jane Carter Wrap & Roll setting foam in hand, I grabbed my custom red Curlettes and proceeded to start rolling exactly how I did with the foam ones. The first thing I noticed was that the Curlettes held their shape well and did not compress down nearly like the foam rollers when rolling each section tightly. Secondly they were surprisingly easy to fasten by pushing the one end through the loop, unlike the foam rollers plastic clips that often fall off…totally frustrating. If anyone is like me, I just want to get the rollers in quickly and go relax before bedtime. I was initially concerned the Curlettes might not hold securely like the foam rollers but was pleasantly surprised they stayed firmly in place after each section. Once all sections were rolled, I secured my set with a silk scarf to sleep on overnight.

Curlettes freshly removed.

Now here’s the thing, when you are sleeping with rollers…no matter which ones they are, you are going to feel them. The difference with Curlettes vs foam rollers, Curlettes do not pinch or pull uncomfortably since they are made from 100% knitted yarn. Also, unlike the foam rollers none of my rolls flattened out overnight whatsoever. That was definitely a positive sign already. When I unrolled each section, they were completely dry and resulted in the most lovely soft tight perfectly rounded curls. Remember, this was my very first time using anything other than foam rollers and I was immediately blown away at how much better my wet set turned out.

Added a little Suavecita pomade.

I broke up the curls with my fingers while applying some Suavecita pomade to the ends. Through the brush out, I found it took much less effort for a nice smooth style. Normally I have to work through twice as long with the foam sets. Needless to say, Curlettes instantly won me over and I’ll be retiring the foam rollers effective immediately! Since I need some more Curlettes for my thick hair, I think I’ll look into their new size large to use on my bangs along with a few additional mediums to ensure there are always enough.

Brush out complete.

Everyone has their own favorite products, tools and ways to set their hair so I cannot guarantee what I use will work for everyone but I can confidently say that Curlettes beat foam rollers hands down in comfort, ease of use and performance. Magic For Tall & Petite

The past few months, my fascination with trousers has grown into an obsession with each new addition. Since their release, I have heard everyone raving and looking phenomenal in their Pinup Girl Clothing Doris Trousers. The tall gals were all thrilled to find trousers that worked for their height so I was convinced there was no way they would work for us petite ladies. Instead, I just longed for these beauties from the sidelines and hoped someday for a petite version. Fortunately one faithful day, I reached out in the Pinup Girl Customer Lounge to see if any petites ladies had successfully tried the Doris Trousers? After receiving glowing recommendations from my fellow shorties, I took the plunge in ordering the Doris Trouser in Chocolate Brown Crepe along with the fabulous Malia Top in Dark Green.

Available in sizes XS-4X ~ MSRP Doris Trousers $128; Malia Top $80

img_8983Being a long time Pinup Girl Clothing customer, I am always grateful for their custom size charts for each garment. It truly helps take so much of the guess work out of shopping online. With my waist (28″) and hips (42″) being a little larger post surgery, I followed the size chart and ordered a Medium in the Doris Trousers. Despite my bust (36″) and waist (28″) being larger than the recommended measurements for the Malia Top, I opted to stay with a size Small since there’s quite a bit of stretch to the fabric. Never was there more anticipation and fear of complete disappointment. Low and behold, the Doris Trousers fit surprisingly well even with my short torso thanks to the elasticized back. Of course they are quite long for me at 5′-4″ tall but I can easily get them hemmed or wear higher heels. Although I already own the Malia Top in two other colours, the Dark Green appears to run a bit smaller with less stretch to the fabric. I definitely recommend to size up for this particular colourway. These 40’s inspired Doris Trousers are made from pebble crepe and fully lined with a soft knit fabric. They feature a high waistband with back elastic for a nipped in waist, with gorgeous pleated wide legs and back zipper closure. The Malia Top is also 40s inspired featuring a striking keyhole design with underbust gathers, 3/4 length sleeves and back zipper closure.

img_8981 img_8987Although I am a diehard 50s’ fashion gal, I have come to also love the 40’s over the last few years. The slimmer silhouettes really lends well to my professional work attire and still has a strong feminine appeal. The Doris Trouser and Malia Top are a powerhouse when paired together and equally as fabulous when worn apart. The fabulous crepe fabric feels like you are wearing pyjamas; draping beautifully off the body and is like walking on a cloud. Thanks to the super innovative elasticized back waistband, there is no waist gaping and it actually cinches in your waist without constricting. There is a reason why I now have the Malia Top in three colourways, they are magnificent! Initially I thought they were a little pricey for a top but after purchasing one during a sale, I immediately saw how much detail went into this design. They are super figure flattering, really comfortable and versatile to match with almost any bottom.

img_8980 img_8985When it comes to accessorizing this fabulous pairing, I opted to keep with the 40’s inspiration by adding some vintage Bakelite bangles in earth tones. For us petite ladies, wearing higher heels creates the illusion of longer and slimmer silhouette.

img_8995 img_8993The love affair with swing trousers is stronger than ever…and the Doris Trousers possess some kind of magic in them for both tall and petite ladies. Just as I have with the Malia Tops, I will be scooping up more colourways in the Doris Trousers. When you find something that fits so well, you fill up your closet with fabulous staples.

Tweed Never Goes Out of Style

There is nothing more timeless than a gorgeous tweed fabric with its endless variations of textures and colours. It gives a true classic elegance to any design, ideal for the fall and winter months. This season, Collectif released their own spin on the traditional tweed by combining a classic charcoal and black with a hint of sparkle. Luckily for all of us, they created a variety of styles in this fabulous sparkle tweed. Since I am a sucker for the classic 1950s circle skirts, I simply could not pass up the Rosie Sparkle Tweed Skirt paired with the Teal Tessa Knitted Top.

Available in sizes 6-22UK ~ On Sale Now Skirt £31.25 & Top £19.25

img_8914Time after time, I find Collectif’s sizing to remain very consistent to their size guides as I haven’t had any sizing mishaps to date. Based on my current measurements (bust 36″, waist 28″), I fit right in line with their size 10 (Small). From the moment my parcel arrived, I was immediately smitten with the charcoal and black woven lurex sparkle tweed…it is such a magnificent combination! The Tessa Knitted Top has ample stretch to hug your figure flawlessly. The fit was spot on for the Rosie Sparkle Tweed Skirt and has ample breathing room since my waist tends to fluctuate. Although this might look like your average 1950s vintage circle skirt, the Rosie Sparkle Tweed Skirt features POCKETS, is fully lined and comes with a leather look thin belt. The Tessa Knitted Top features a classic off the shoulder fold over collar, with three-quarter sleeves and cropped body. At 5′-4″ tall, the skirt hemline measures 30.5 inches in length.

img_8907 img_8908This Collectif duo is sure to become a staple in any wardrobe, the options to mix and match are boundless. I personally find I gravitate more towards separates through the fall and winter months, allowing me to create new looks for every occasion. The heavy fabric of the Rosie Sparkle Tweed Skirt really gives this design lots of body and structure, very reminiscent of vintage Dior. If you love the look of vintage two piece suits, I highly recommend pairing it with the matching Heather Jacket or Diana Blazer. Since I often shy away from the colour black, the Tessa Knitted Top in teal is a wonderful pop of colour and still classic together. The subtle lurex sparkle tweed is charming and not in your face shimmer.

img_8904 img_8894When pairing the Teal Tessa Knitted Top and Rosie Sparkle Tweed Skirt together, I opted to play up the sparkle with my Splendette Starburst Bangles in clear and teal. I wavered between knee high boots or classic pumps, both looked fabulous with the ensemble. For a more glam feel, I felt the pumps were the right choice but I’ll be wearing stiletto boots for work attire. To maintain an authentic vintage touch, I would not recommend adding a petticoat.

img_8910 img_8901If you come across a fabulous tweed fabric, it is difficult not to want more than just one design. Seeing as I loved the Rosie Skirt so much…I recently picked up the Rita Sparkle Tweed Trousers during Collectif’s annual end of season sale. Luckily for all of you, these pieces are now on clearance and you can score great clothing for a bargain! Dress For Success Every Day

It feels like winter has been here forever and it is not even at the half way point yet. We are now into the treacherous days of deep cold so my dresses are safely hibernating in the closet. The only things that are getting me through are fabulous jumpers and tops paired with trousers for my daily workday attire. I take a lot of pride to look polished and professional, dressing for success every day…with the exception of casual Fridays. Here are two of my favorite staples this season, the Bobbie Jumper in Harlequin Harvest and Kitty Batwing Top in Purple by Miss Fortune UK.

Bobbie Jumper in Harlequin Harvest ~ £37.99

Available in sizes XS-2X

bobbiejumper2It is no secret that I absolutely adore everything about Autumn, it is the most beautiful time of year. What you may not know is that I have a real soft spot for vintage Harlequin prints, so to me…this is a match made in heaven! Initially I was unsure what size to order as my measurements (bust 36″, waist 28″) were right in between the Small and Medium, but I decided to stay with my usual size Small in hopes for a more fitted look. My decision was the right one as the Bobbie Jumper fit perfectly with enough stretch in the knit to accommodate my bust comfortably. For those of you wondering, it is made from a lovely soft acrylic knit and is not scratchy or irritating on sensitive skin (often seen with knit sweaters). The Bobbie Jumper is intentionally designed as a crop high waist; meant to be paired with high waisted skirts, trousers, shorts or jeans. The rich autumn harlequin print is extremely versatile, ideal to be worn dressy or casual with endless pairing options. Today I wanted to showcase a business casual ensemble, matching the Bobbie Jumper in Harlequin Harvest with the PUG Doris Trousers in Chocolate Brown Crepe accented by a vintage Bakelite bangles.

bobbiejumperKitty Batwing Top in Purple ~ £29.00

Available in sizes XS-2X

kittybatwingSomehow Miss Fortune UK has found a way to convert me from disliking purple to loving it! It all started a year ago with the Carrie Swing Dress in Black/Purple Tartan, since then the colour purple has magically started to appear in my wardrobe more and more. Luckily for all of you, the Kitty Batwing Tops are available in an array of additional colours…and trust me when I say you will want to buy them all! On a quick note, these tops are made to order therefore make sure to allow a little additional processing time when placing an order for these beauties. Once again, I opted to order mine in a size Small based on my measurements (bust 36″, waist 28″). The Kitty Batwing Tops are made from a super comfy jersey knit and feature a classic subtle batwing 3/4 length sleeves, with a high slash neck. They make a terrific wardrobe staple, perfect to mix and match with any bottoms. To switch up my looks, I wanted to showcase a more casual yet still professional ensemble by pairing the Kitty Batwing Top in Purple with cigarette capri pants accented by the Erstwilder Tulips brooch.

kittybatwing2Although we are all dreaming of dress season, aka Spring…we can find solitude in finding fantastic alternatives to help us weather the storm during the cold winter months. Versatile separates like the Bobbie Jumper and Kitty Batwing Top are sure to brighten your wardrobe year round.
