Frolicking In A Winter Wonderland

I often get asked how to transition dresses to be worn year round when living in such a cold climate. Well the answer is quite simple…Collectif Winter Coats! This is the second season in a row that I add more of their designs to my regular rotation of winter outerwear and I absolutely adore them. Why? They are not only beautiful, they are so incredibly cozy and warm. Now that I already own the Pearl in green and Rachel in gray, it was time to expand to some lovely warm neutrals. From the moment I saw the Collectif Frances 40s Riding Coat, I knew she had to be mine.

Available in sizes 6-22UK ~ MSRP £153.50

Finding the proper sizing with coats can be rather tricky since you need to ensure the shoulders width is just right and also allow for enough room to layer for a great fit. I opted to stay with my usual size 10(Small), just as I had with the Rachel Coat. The Frances Riding Coat did not disappoint. It seems to run a little snugger in the waist but there was still just enough room for layering over dresses. The 40s inspired Frances Riding Coat features a double breasted button design, a rounded collar, is fully lined and has a flared princess skirt with pleated back detail. Made from a rich brown speckled polyester and wool blend fabric.

Now here’s the trick when shopping for warm winter coats…look at the percentage of wool content. The more wool, the warmer it will be. Here is a comparison with Collectif’s most popular styles: Pearl 50%, Rachel 60%, Frances 20%. With those facts in mind, I would rate the warmth of each one to be completely in line with the ratio of wool blend. The Frances Riding Coat is still very warm but I would definitely reach for my Rachel Coat on the blistering subzero days. The simplicity of the Frances makes it a great basic coat to wear regularly and not just on those “fancy” occasions like the Pearl.

To show how the Frances is great for layering, underneath I chose to wear a very bulky vintage wool circle skirt. As you can see, the sweep of the coat molds and drapes beautifully to the fullness of the skirt. Often times coats tend to compress and wrinkle our dresses when there’s not enough space to expand accordingly. Since we often have a lot of snow and ice, I opt to wear winter boots while outdoors and change into my nice shoes when arriving at my destination. This also helps with keeping your legs and feet warm while the Frances Coat is long enough to keep the rest of you toasty.

After trying numerous winter coats from various vintage reproduction brands, I can say confidently that Collectif is by far the best when it comes to style, functionality and most importantly…warmth! Do not despair if you missed out on the Frances Riding Coat on Collectif’s website, there are still some available online from their wholesale partners.

PS. All our snow melted a few days before this shoot and we got hit with a massive storm only days later. Got to love old man winter right?

Winter Blooms

With many of us now in hibernation for the long cold winter season, desperate for any glimpse of spring we find ourselves planning ahead and scooping up beautiful frocks during the end of season clearance sales. It was utter pandemonium when Collectif Clothing announced their semi-annual 50% off Sale…but can you really blame us for wanting pretty clothes at such incredible prices? With oodles of bright summery florals in my closet, I felt the need to add some winter inspired blooms to complete my collection. From the moment I saw the Maria Woodland Bloom Swing Dress, I knew it was destined to be mine.

Available in sizes 6-22UK ~ MSRP £60 Sale £45

IMG_6976 IMG_6966After sharing several reviews of my many dresses from Collectif, I always seemed to find the waist to be rather loose on the size 10UK(Small) and simply belted them to fit. This time I decided to take a little gamble going down to a size 8UK(extra-small) based on my current measurements being nearly on par with the size chart (bust 36, waist 26/27). This risky decision paid off wonderfully as the Maria Dress fit me like a glove, no longer was there any gaping in the waist. I would venture to say that the Maria Dress fits accurately based on the size chart but be mindful there is no stretch in the fabric. For the ladies with a short torso like myself, you may find that the shoulders need to be taken up slightly to better suit our proportions. The Maria Dress features a gorgeous crossover-faux-wrap bust, short sleeves with full flared skirt and deep V detail with back zipper closure. What makes the Maria truly spectacular is the rich all over winter floral print fabric; this isn’t grandmas’ old sofa we’re talking about. At 5′-4″ tall, the flared skirt falls mid calf…definitely ideal for the taller gals.

IMG_6997 IMG_6965The Maria Woodland Bloom Swing Dress seemed to call to me every time I was browsing the Collectif website. I contemplated for some time that I should go with the Maria Autumns Leaves Swing Dress for something a little different than floral; maybe it was fate trying to intervene as I always found myself pinning over the rich Woodland Bloom print tirelessly. Lesson learned…we should never doubt our instincts as they will never steer us a stray. There is no doubt in my mind now that the opulent winter blooms was the best choice of the two prints. The Maria Dress design is quite simple yet classic, perfect for any occasion. Some may shy away from short sleeves due to comfort but these are not constricting at all, I can easily lift my arms up overhead with ease. The crossover-faux-wrap bust can be a bit boobilicious depending on the type of bra worn underneath, avoid push-up style bras for a more conservative decolletage.

IMG_6991 IMG_6970From the moment I put on the Maria Dress, I knew it had to be paired with my vintage pearl necklace and Collectif Pearl Bracelet with Diamante Bow. Just recently I spotted some of the cutest shoes at Collectif by Lulu Hun; it was like a match made in heaven when I came across the fabulous Amelia Mid Wedges to go with the rich burgundy in the Woodland Bloom. With a little online research, I found out that a 7US converted to 5UK. The sizing worked out quite well, they were a bit wide for my narrow feet but nothing an insole can’t fix. As a gal that can’t wear high heels, these wedges are wonderful to give me a little extra height without the sore feet to go along with it. Luckily I had the perfect colour belt to coordinate with my shoes and added a petticoat to complete the whole ensemble.

LuluHunCan winter be done already so we be rid of bulky snow boots & coats and enjoy wearing all of our beautiful frocks again? In the meantime while we wait, we can enjoy treating ourselves to the fabulous end of season sale going on now at Collectif Clothing! You can scoop up deals on the stunning Maria Woodland Bloom Swing Dress along with many other styles, but don’t wait too long as sizes are quickly selling out!
