In the tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki room

Hey everyone! I know it has been awfully quiet on the blog in the past few weeks…life has been a wee bit hectic and I am trying my best to find balance so that I don’t let my readers down. In addition, I have really slowed down on adding new pretties to my wardrobe in order to enjoy the pieces that I have collected over the years. Of course I will continue to showcase fabulous vintage reproduction clothing and genuine vintage in the coming weeks and months, possibly in a slightly different format but with the same love and dedication.

Earlier this spring, Disney announced the release of an exclusive collection called The Dress Shop featuring vintage reproduction designs inspired by Disney classics to be sold exclusively at their parks. The news delighted the pinup community, especially when sneak peeks were released showcasing designs that included: Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, “It’s a Small World”, The Haunted Mansion, The Twilight Zone of Terror, Orange Bird, Minnie Mouse, Snow White, and Alice in Wonderland. Instantly I fell head over heels for The Enchanted Tiki Room Dress and enlisted the help of a friend to nab me one on opening day at Disneyland’s The Dress Shop.

Available in sizes XS-3x ~ MSRP $118.

With The Dress Shop collection being brand new, no one had any idea how sizing would run so I relied of my friend’s feedback. Since we are similar in measurements, she recommended the size Small since the waist flat measured 26″ with ample stretch to the fabric. Many customers mentioned the fit was quite generous in the larger sizes and they were able to size down, sometimes even two sizes. For me, the size Small fit perfectly in the bust (36″) and waist (27″)…sizing down was not required. To make this collection even more special, each dress came in a lovely zippered garment bag with the boutiques logo. The Enchanted Tiki Dress features a gathered bust, thick wide straps with removable silk flower brooch, a fitted waistband, flared skirt and back zippered closure. What makes this truly spectacular is the vibrant Enchanted Tiki Room tropical motif set on a gorgeous green background. At 5′-4″ tall, the hemline falls just below the knees.

The Dress Shop Collection definitely lived up to all the anticipation and hype. I was initially keeping my expectations low since we had no idea what to expect from an unknown designer but Disney never seems to offer anything sub par. The fit and design is impeccable. The Enchanted Tiki Dress was made with excellent craftsmanship and quality fabric at a reasonable price point. They cut no corners; the skirt is super full and this dress is so utterly comfortable. I’m a sucker for the colour green and in this case, the adorable Enchanted Tiki Room birds really pop against the rich Kelly green background. I think the removable silk flower brooch is a nice finishing touch to the design. It is no surprise that The Enchanted Tiki Dress garners lots of compliments and admiration wherever you go.

When it came to accessorizing The Enchanted Tiki Dress, it was a no brainer to play up the tropical theme. One of my easy go to choices in these cases is a simple stack of bamboo wooden bangles and brown Malaga wedges by Remix. Some may like to add a petticoat for added fullness to the skirt, me I rather go without for a more relaxed look.

As lifelong Disney fan, the Dress Shop Collection is a welcomed addition to the vintage reproduction world. The new line sold out almost immediately, which we can only hope means more whimsical Disney designs are to come. There have been rumors that these designs will be available online in the future but there is no official confirmation at this time.

A Dynamic Duo ~ Bright & Cheerful

For the past couple months, I have been impatiently waiting to showcase my favorite ensemble from Collectif’s Spring/Summer 2016 Collection. This dynamic duo coordinate magically together but are also very versatile mix and match separates. Being a complete sucker for bright bold prints, I could not resist the fabulously striking Jasmine Paint Pots Skirt and matching Romy Plain Top.

Available in sizes 6-22UK ~ MSRP Top £27.50 Skirt £45.00

IMG_8405For several seasons now, I have found that Collectif sizing has remained very consistent and typically order the same size in every design. As my waist (27″) is in between two sizes I tend to size down to 8UK(extra small) when it comes to their skirts because I have found they are usually cut more generously. Now here’s where you can all learn from my mistake, the Jasmine Paint Pots Skirt appears to be spot on with the size chart therefore do NOT size down if you are in between two sizes. I should have ordered the 10UK but luckily managed to squeeze into the smaller size and hide the portion that cannot be zipped closed with a wide belt. Since I much prefer a little more breathing room in a top, I went with a size 10UK(small) in the Romy Plain Top and it fits impeccably due to the slight stretch in the fabric. The Jasmine Paint Pots Skirt is a classic 1950’s gathered full skirt that accentuates the waist and features the most striking colourful print. The Romy Plain Top features an off the shoulder contrast Bardot neckline, a figure flattering bodice and inverted back zipper closure. At 5′-4″ tall, the skirt falls just below the knees and measures 26″ in length.

IMG_8412 IMG_8416The Jasmine Paint Pots Skirt and Romy Plain Top are such a magnificent ensemble; a classic style mixed with a bold cheerful quality. For the last little while, I find myself collecting more and more swing skirts as they are so very versatile to create a multitude of looks. The Jasmine Paint Pots Skirt is one of those pieces that can coordinate with a variety of tops; whether it be a simple solid t-shirt, the stylish Romy Plain Top or even a lovely knitted sweater for those cooler days…you can’t go wrong. The Romy Plain Top is seriously one of the most beautiful designs, it is utterly flattering and so comfortable. It is the perfect length to wear as is for a more casual look or tucked into your favorite vintage bottoms. The off the shoulder straps have ample room for ease of movement and stay perfectly in place. Simply pair it with a basic strapless bra or a bustier if you prefer more support and control.

IMG_8431 IMG_8427With a such a great mix of bold cheerful colours in the paint pots print, there are endless possibilities to accessorize. Lately, I am obsessed with coordinating plastic bangles with my outfits and they do look quite fabulous with the Jasmine Paint Pots Skirt and Romy Plain Top. I also paired this ensemble with wide white belt to give more waist definition and the Dennise wedges by B.A.I.T. Of course no outfit would be complete without a darling Alice Novelty Brooch by The Ambrosia Bowl.

IMG_8417 IMG_8409As a longtime Collectif fan, I am always thrilled to add more delightful designs like the Jasmine Paint Pots Skirts and Romy Plain Top to my collection. This lovely duo will have us all creating endless outfit combinations and wondering how we ever lived without them. Fortunately for all of you, both styles have recently been restocked and will not last long so grab them now before you miss out!

I Found Myself In Wonderland

It has already been a month since our wondrous trip to Walt Disney World but the memories are going to be with us for a lifetime. Seeing as I am a huge Disney fan and this was my first time going…I had to have the perfect outfits to show off my personal style! All the vacation planning was quite tedious to say the least so I was quite relieved to find the most darling vintage inspired Disney skirts months in advance on Etsy. One of my favorite characters is Alice so when I stumbled upon the Alice in Wonderland Vintage 50’s Novelty Border Print Circle Skirt by Shawna Lay Designs, I knew instantly it was meant to be.

Available in custom order sizing ~ MSRP $80-$110USD

IMG_6088With all of Shawna’s designs being made to order, you simply have to select the appropriate waist measurement between 22″-40″. If for any reason your need a size outside of what is available don’t fret, simple send her a message to discuss the option of a custom listing. All of the fabrics listed are available in very limited quantities therefore it is best to purchase immediately to avoid disappointment. This particular Alice in Wonderland Border Print was extremely popular and actually sold out in a matter of days! With my order placed, I waited patiently for my skirt to be made with the lead time being approximately 1-2 weeks based on the store’s policies. It no time, my custom Alice in Wonderland Circle Skirt was at the door and I was truly mesmerized by its beauty. The craftsmanship was phenomenal and very reminiscent of the gathered circle skirts from the 1950’s. The fabric was incredibly thick and gave the skirt so much body, I was quite surprised by the superior quality. The Circle Skirt features a very full gathered design, a wide waistband with button and invisible zipper closure. At 5′-4″ tall, the skirt falls several inches below the knees.

IMG_6104Obviously there was absolutely no way I could wait to wear the Alice in Wonderland Circle Skirt with our Disney trip still being months away, I was completely smitten from the moment I laid eyes on it. Maybe that is my inner Disney geek coming out but the print designed by Koko Seki (printed by Lucien) positively captures the essence of Alice in Wonderland. One of my favorite details is the contrasting waistband, I sincerely believe that unique design element makes this skirt truly spectacular. Needless to say, this was an instant hit at Disney World…I had Cast Members and other park goers stopping me all day long gushing over how much they loved the Alice and Wonderland Circle Skirt.

IMG_6100The red, black and white colour scheme makes it super easy to style with separates already in your closet. It was a sure bet that the Scarlett bustier in red by Fables by Barrie was a match made in heaven. For work, I added a simple black bolero and paired it with the Vogue wedges by Remix. The Alice brooch by Tangerine Menagerie was the icing on the cake for this entire ensemble. With the fullness of the gathers and thickness of the fabric, you can add a petticoat for more volume or easily go without.

IMG_6105 IMG_6109At one time, Shawna had more of these Koko Seki Disney border fabrics available and I really regret missing out on the Snow White print as it continues to haunt me to this day. These particular designs are imported from overseas but luckily Shawna sourced several bolts of these fabrics from a US supplier and passed along the savings to her customers by offering affordable made to order circle skirts. Make sure to check out her Etsy Store for more incredible Disney fabrics and vintage inspired designs!
