Vintage Long Stem Roses Dress by Roy H. Bjorkman

One thing that I know for certain, my adoration for all things floral came at a very early age. My mom dubbed me a natural green thumb as she always knew where to find me when I was a kid…out in her gardens planting and watering the flowers. Every year I would find new species that I would fall in love with, they are all so beautiful in their own special way. The memory that I will never forget is the anticipation her only rose bush to be in full bloom; it had the most beautiful rich deep pink roses I have ever seen. It should come as no surprise that my love of floral prints has only grown over the last few decades and can easily be seen in my vintage wardrobe collection.

  • Jewelry – Vintage rhinestone bangles

The greatest thing about collecting vintage floral prints, is that there are endless possibilities out there to discover. It is no surprise that the classic rose was very common in the 1950’s. Fashion designers captured their beauty by making them center stage in their designs. Often we will see the same prints being used by different designers, each one utilizing their creativity to make theirs unique.

In recent years, I have come across the Vintage Long Stem Roses print in red and yellow in a variety of styles but they always eluded me as they were much too small in size or WAY over my budget. This past May, I stumbled upon an IG sneak preview photo from Swanee Grace of the most elegant Vintage Long Stem Roses Dress but this time in purple, blue and yellow roses! I was even more excited when I saw the size was my exact measurements but expected a very hefty price tag. Luckily the shop owner posted the exact time it would be listed on Etsy so I was refreshing every 10 seconds in anticipation. Needles to say, I didn’t hesitate when I saw it was withing my budget and sped through the checkout process like a madwoman.

Never before had I seen this stunning colourway and I truly adore it more than the red/yellow version. The Vintage Long Stem Roses Dress by Roy H. Bjorkman is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. I didn’t even realize the background colour is a soft powder blue, usually you only see it in white. This definitely made the dress even more unique and extra special. The bodice features gorgeous diamond rhinestones scattered throughout. Miraculously, the dress is in pristine condition…barely worn over the past 6 decades.

When it comes to collecting vintage, the best piece of advice that I can pass along is to be patient. Vintage can be an incredibly frustrating passion at the best of times but those who are patient, often find the most amazing treasures when they least expect it. Do not lose hope…those special treasures will find you when the time is right.

The Eternal Rose ~ Part Deux

With the excitement of the 19th Viva Rockabilly Weekender in Las Vegas well underway…I wanted to mention that we are taking a little break this year but definitely planning to attend the 20th Anniversary in 2017. Fret not; I have enlisted the help of my best friend Amber who will recap the highlights of this year’s event for all of us that could not attend. In the meantime, let the rest of us continue shopping until our hearts content! Last week I introduced to you a fabulous Etsy designer, Hearts and Found. Seeing as one can never have too many rose prints in their wardrobe, I could not resist ordering a dress in each striking colorway. From the moment I saw the Penelope Dress, I knew it would look stunning in “Tea Time in the Rose Garden” in Buttercream border print.

Available in sizes XS-4X ~ MSRP $78.00 – 82.00USD

IMG_7380Before placing my order, Marjorie was kind enough to send me a digital rendering of the Penelope Dress in the Tea Time in the Rose Garden border print fabric to give me a clear visualization of the final design. It is needless to say, seeing the real dress in person was much more incredible of course! As mentioned in my first review, Hearts and Found offers off the rack sizing in addition to customized to your exact measurements. Seeing as my measurements (bust 36”, waist 26-27”) fell between two sizes, I opted to get the Penelope Dress made to measure. One word of caution, if your waist size tends to fluctuate like mine…it is always best to go with the larger measurement for comfort. The fit was quite snug in the waist since I mistakenly went with my smaller waist measurement of 26” (my own fault) but still comfortable regardless and motivation to lose those few pounds of winter weight. It is always a relief when dress straps are adjustable to accommodate all torso length; mine being quite short, I had to tighten them to the smallest point. The Penelope Dress features a classic scoop neckline with adjustable spaghetti straps, a boldly low plunging back, a full gathered skirt, fully lined with hidden pockets and back zipper closure. At 5’-4” tall, I ordered the skirt length as Knee L (Tall) 26” to fall a couple inches below the knees.

IMG_7398 IMG_7395Hearts and Found recreates the most classic designs from the 1950’s whilst improving them to be versatile for the modern day fashionistas. With prices of vintage novelty prints and border prints skyrocketing, it is a blessing to find gorgeous alternatives that won’t break your wallet. The quality and construction of the Penelope Dress is impeccable for the price. I might add that it is wonderful to see that no corners are being cut with important elements like a fully lined interior on a light cream coloured dress. With such a classic design, it is easy to make the Penelope Dress transform from a casual outing like running errands to a very chic summer wedding. There is no doubt in my mind, I’ll be wearing the Penelope Dress to work and just about anywhere all summer long since I adore rose prints so much.

IMG_7406The possibilities to embellish the lovely rose print are endless; pearls, jewelry in just about any shade of pink, greens, etc. My favorite accessory to make summer dresses suitable for work are the super versatile MAK cropped cardigans as they come in all shades of the colour spectrum. Seeing as the Penelope features a very full gathered skirt, you can add a petticoat for extra fullness or go without depending on the look you wish to achieve.

IMG_7379 IMG_7376Taking a chance on new brands and online shops can definitely feel like a gamble at times. I was not hesitant at all when placing my first order with Hearts and Found, thanks to their remarkable online customer reviews on Etsy. Customer’s feedback speaks louder than any pictures or price tag when your hard earned money is on the line. The stellar customer service from Marjorie made the whole experience wonderful from start to finish which instantly made another loyal customer out of me.

Aurora’s Botanical Garden

Recently, Pin Up Persuasion made an open call to all independent vintage inspired designers in hopes to showcase some fresh new talent and to support small businesses. Many may assume that these entrepreneurs might not compare to the household brand names but you would be quite surprised as their attention to detail and creativity often outshines their larger counterparts. On the flip side of the coin, those larger brands started somewhere years ago and most often than not…it’s these passionate creative minds that followed their dreams. It was so exciting when the lovely Alixis from Ains & Elke StyleHaus reached out, as I had heard such incredible things about her creations from several fellow pinups and can truly foresee the day when we can all say, “we knew her when…”. Luckily for all of you, this is a special two part feature to showcase the variety of designs you can expect from Ains & Elke StyleHaus. First up is the magnificent Aurora Dress in Botanic Print.

IMG_5347 IMG_5357The wonderful thing about purchasing from a small independent shop like Ains & Elke StyleHaus is that most items are made to order therefore sizing can be customized to fit your measurements. In this case, I fell in love with the design of the Aurora Dress and was able to select from the wide array of fabrics that they had on hand. It was definitely like being a kid in a candy store being told you can pick whatever you want! The moment I laid eyes on the Botanic Print, I knew it was a match made in heaven. Since this was a complete custom order, I provided Alixis with my measurements (bust 36”, waist 27”, skirt length 27”) and patiently waited for my Aurora to come to life. Needless to say, when she posted a photo of my Aurora in Botanic Print…I was speechless and couldn’t wait for it to arrive. Without a shadow of a doubt, the Aurora Dress lived up to every expectation when I finally saw it in person. The fit was spot on from head to toe and I was pretty excited at the fact I could wear a normal bra with the perfect placement of the straps. The Aurora Dress features a darling sweetheart neckline with contrasting faux petal bust detail, a fully lined bodice accented by a nipped in waist with gathered full skirt, and back metal zipper. Since I prefer my skirts to fall a few inches below the knee, I opted for a longer length (27”) although I’m only 5’-4” tall in order to encompass as much of the print as possible.

IMG_5392 IMG_5369The Aurora Dress has a truly a classic elegance that flatters the body beautifully. The fabric is quality medium weight cotton with vibrant and rich botanic print capturing the most gorgeous lush floral print. As you can imagine, the correct placement of the print is essential in making this design; clearly done to perfection by Alixis’s keen eye to detail with the flow of the bodice print in combination to the skirt. I absolutely love how comfortable and lightweight this style is, easy to wear to every occasion. The quality in craftsmanship is superb; I would compare it to Heart of Haute and other small scale locally made garments. A little part of my wishes this dress was one of a kind for selfish reasons but I honestly couldn’t do that to all of you because it’s just too gorgeous not to share.

IMG_5367With all the rich colours in the mesmerizing botanical print, the options to embellish are limitless. I chose to contrast with white accessories (belt and wedges) in order to not take away from the beauty of the bold floral. The wonderful thing about a gathered skirt is that you can wear a petticoat for added volume or go without and still have the right amount of fullness. As I mentioned previously, this particular style and print is versatile for work, an afternoon BBQ, or even a summer wedding. When I wore the Aurora Dress to work recently, I simply added a cute white bolero for added coverage and to keep warm from the chilly air conditioning.

IMG_5375 IMG_5388The splendor of Aurora’s the classic style is truly reminiscent of its name. If floral print is not your particular cup of tea, there are a plethora prints and colours available from Ains & Elke StyleHaus and they also allow customers to provide their own fabric as well. This is definitely one of the great benefits of working with smaller independent designers, with superior customer service and many customization options available. Stay tuned for part two of the Ains & Elke StyleHaus feature…showcasing versatile separates that are sure to become instant wardrobe staples for every pinup.
