Viva Rockabilly Weekend 20 Outfits Round Up!

As many of you know, the one thing I truly look forward to when attending the Viva Rockabilly Weekend is getting all dolled up. The guarantee of beautiful hot and sunny weather always makes it the best place to step up my game and really go for it especially at the car show. This year, I chose to shop my closet rather than spending a lot of unnecessary money outfits just for Viva. I am the first to admit that in years’ past, I went way overboard with how much money I spent on outfits just for Viva. Luckily over the years, I have curated a lovely collection of vintage pieces and learned to be way more budget savvy along the way. To complete a few ensembles, I sourced inexpensive staple accessories from Etsy and Ebay that I can wear again. In addition to showcasing each outfit in the round up, I will detail what was from my closet vs purchased.

Wednesday

We flew in that morning from Detroit and I chose to arrive already dressed for a day of exploring Vegas. This entire look was put together from items in my wardrobe.

  • Top: Peasant Top in Mint by Pinup Girl Clothing
  • Skirt: Vintage Novelty Print from Ooh La La Vintage
  • Jewelry: Vintage white beaded necklace from Etsy & bangles thrifted
  • Purse: Vintage wicker handbag from Etsy
  • Shoes: Ballet flats white from Payless

    Thursday

This was the “official” first day of the Viva Rockabilly Weekend but many people were still arriving throughout the day. I was quite excited about this outfit to be quite honest as it is my all time favorite vintage skirt! That said, I opted to custom order this golden yellow top from Violets in May to complete the ensemble beautifully for only $52.

  • Top: Brittany Top in golden yellow by Violets in May
  • Skirt: Vintage Rose Print from The Vintage Mistress
  • Jewelry: Vintage Bakelite thrifted
  • Purse: Vintage wicker handbag from Etsy
  • Shoes: Malaga in brown by Remix

Mid afternoon, I changed into one of my favorite vintage Hawaiian dresses by Alfred Shaheen. All items were curated from my closet, including this amazing wicker fish handbag that I found on Ebay for under $40.

  • Dress: Vintage Alfred Shaheen from Hidden River Finds Co
  • Jewelry: Vintage wood bangles thrifted
  • Purse: Vintage wicker fish handbag from Ebay
  • Shoes: Malaga in brown by Remix

In the evening, we went to dinner at The Golden Steer with friends and thus commencing the parade of gorgeous formal attire. I searched high and low on the interwebs for this exact vintage gold atomic necklace that the original seller of this dress had paired it with and luckily found one on Etsy for under $30. Although you cannot see them in my photo, I purchased a staple pair of gold t-strap heels from Royal Vintage Shoes as soon as they were restocked for only $68.

Friday

It is no secret that I have a profound adoration for vintage 1950’s Hawaiian clothing, especially by designer Alfred Shaheen. I recently acquire this red and orange dress from Ooh La La Vintage from an old friend and knew it had to make its debut at Viva. Since I often wear a lot of red, I purchased this gorgeous marbled flame red beaded necklace on Etsy for under $50.

  • Dress: Vintage Alfred Shaheen from Ooh La La Vintage
  • Jewelry: Vintage red beaded necklace from Etsy & wooden bangles thrifted
  • Purse: Coconut handbag from Ebay
  • Hairflower: Custom tropical by Miss Sneaky Tiki
  • Shoes: Malaga in brown by Remix

Friday afternoon, we were fortunate to have a cabana by the pool to lounge with friends. This vintage playsuit was another very recent acquisition from Ooh La La Vintage that I had the elastic shirring restored just in time for Viva.

  • Playsuit: Vintage Kamehamaha from Ooh La La Vintage
  • Jewelry: Wooden bangles thrifted
  • Hairflower: Glitter orchids handmade by a friend
  • Shoes: Malaga in brown by Remix

Now here I must confess, I searched for a vintage prom dress for almost 2 years in anticipation of wearing it at Viva. It was the one thing I desperately wanted but was not willing to spend an insane amount of money. Fate must have been on my side as I only just found the most perfect one a couple months before for under $200. With little vintage evening jewelry in collection, I picked up a classic rhinestone set from Etsy for under $40 along with this timeless Vintage Silver evening bag for $25 on Ebay.

  • Dress: Vintage blue prom dress from Xatabay Vintage
  • Jewelry: Vintage Rhinestone set from Etsy
  • Purse: Vintage Duramesh silver handbag from Ebay
  • Petticoat: Vintage long petticoat borrowed

Saturday

One of my favorite events at Viva is the Car Show and I always save my most favorite outfit for that day. As many of you know, I spent many hours restoring this vintage dress in recent weeks and could not wait to wear it for the first time at the Car Show. The morning started off with getting glammed up by two of the most talented ladies in the community, Erika Reno and Madame Pomp. To complete the look, I found this amazing vintage hat on Ebay for under $20 and added a pink millinery rose to coordinate with my dress.

With the hot afternoon sun, I opted to switch into an unplanned outfit for the afternoon in hopes of staying a little cooler. Not only did I receive tons of compliments, the lightweight rayon fabric was so refreshing while we perused the classic cars and vendors. This lovely reproduction 40s loungewear set was custom made using vintage fabric by the incredibly talented Alexandra of California. All pieces were sourced from my closet.

  • Playsuit: 40’s Beach Pajama Set by Alexandra of CA
  • Jewelry: Wooden bangles thrifted
  • Purse: Coconut handbag from Ebay
  • Hairflower: Pineapple by Andy’s Eye Candy
  • Shoes: Malaga in brown by Remix

Saturday night is when everyone pulls out all the stops and wears their most glamorous evening attire…it is truly a sight to see right out of an old Hollywood movie. In the past, I have splurged on expensive gowns for this occasion but this year I got incredibly lucky when I happened upon this floor length gown with train on Ebay for a insane STEAL!!!! The breathtaking scalloped beaded bodice and beautifully cascading train made me feel like the belle of the ball. Luckily I had my sewing kit for any vintage emergencies as the zipper seams started to let go as soon as I put it on. You just never know what can go wrong with vintage!

  • Dress: Vintage evening gown from Ebay
  • Jewelry: Vintage 20-30’s borrowed
  • Purse: Vintage Lucite gold confetti handbag from Curiosity Shop
  • Shoes: Sergi gold Chelsea Crew T-straps from Royal Vintage Shoes

Sunday

With Viva winding down, we enjoy spending the day lounging by the pool at the infamous Sunday Pool Party. This year I wanted to be comfortable rather than all gussied up. Since the walk from our room is quite far on top of waiting in line for a while, I couldn’t believe my luck when these green playsuit shorts matched my novelty fish print swimsuit perfectly (yes, completely unplanned). The whole look was created in my closet and so comfy!

Enjoying a relaxing afternoon, I decided to switch up my planned evening look for something a little more comfy. Originally I had planned to wear this Vintage Alfred Shaheen Sarong the afternoon before at the car show. Knowing it could not sit hidden in my suitcase, it made a great evening look for a casual dinner with the hubby.

  • Dress: Vintage Alfred Shaheen Sarong from Ebay
  • Jewelry: Wooden bangles thrifted
  • Purse: Coconut handbag from Ebay
  • Shoes: Malaga in brown by Remix

To finish off our Viva festivities low-key, we enjoyed a couple games of bowling with friends. This was a spare outfit I had packed as this vintage novelty skirt was too darling to not show off. I picked it up recently at The Toronto Vintage Clothing Show last month for under $75.

  • Top: Peasant Top in Orange by Pinup Girl Clothing
  • Skirt: Vintage Novelty Print from Retrouverbiz
  • Jewelry: Vintage Bakelite & plastic bangles thrifted
  • Purse: Vintage wicker handbag from Etsy
  • Shoes: Pleated toe in black by Remix

Normally, Viva is known for a parade of spectacular vintage clothing from around the world but this year felt quite different than years past. There appeared to be very little vintage during the daytime festivities, replaced by a sea of low end reproduction attire (think $20 Ebay knock offs from China). Yes there is something for everyone of course and reproduction clothing can be done extremely well as we all know. Overall, the atmosphere at the 20th Anniversary was really not the same for seasoned attendees. Of course we did not let that ruin our spirits…we did as we always do…HAVE FUN!

Viva has wholeheartedly allowed me to showcase my true love of genuine vintage clothing and I think it is time to bring that to the readers of Pin Up Persuasion. Until now, the blog was primarily focused on vintage reproduction reviews with small snippets of vintage here and there. That is definitely going to change from this moment forward, now with a greater focus on vintage mixed with repro. I would like to ask all of you…what would you like to read in vintage outfit posts? Your recommendations and requests are always welcome! ❤

Fluttering From The Autumn Tree

Do you ever find yourself being drawn to certain elements or motifs that subconsciously bring back fond memories? For as long as I can remember, I always adored things which symbolized Autumn…my most favorite time of year. One of those elements is the classic maple leaf; it not only reminds me of Autumn but also an iconic symbol for us Canadians. Slowly, I have collected some lovely vintage maple leaf accessories but felt there was a void that needed to be filled when it came to my wardrobe. For ages I lusted over the Pinup Girl Clothing Butterfly Dress in Leaves Print but never took the plunge until just recently.

Available in sizes XS-4X ~ MSRP $180

img_8939Although my measurements (b36/w27-28/hips40-41) have fluctuated over the last little while, I still fall within PUG’s size Small in their dresses. The Butterfly Dress is super stretchy but it is strongly recommend to size up if you are in between sizes to not to distort the nature of the print. As an added bonus, you will receive the matching turban which previously was sold separately for $64. Thankfully the fit and sizing was right on par with the size chart, the size Small fit wonderfully. The Butterfly Dress features a flirty keyhole opening with elasticized gathered neckline, wide fluttering sleeves, a soft curve hugging and flared skirt, is fully lined in knit crepe, includes a thin black faux-leather belt and finished off with a back zipper closure. Made from a luscious silky smooth knit crepe fabric, adorned with classic autumn leaves on a rich teal background. At 5′-4″ tall, the hemline falls several inches below the knees.

img_8932 img_8930It is refreshing to see more designers like PUG branching out into different styles and allowing us to diversify our wardrobes. Lately I find myself wandering into an earlier era and really loving the sleeker 1940s silhouettes. What kept me on the fence for so long with the Butterfly Dress was the fear that the draping would overwhelm my petite frame and look like I was wearing a sack of potatoes. Thankfully those fears quickly diminished when I finally gave it a whirl. I was more taken aback by the substantial weight of the crepe fabric, this is definitely not meant to be worn on those hot summer days. If you are looking for a little more versatility, the Butterfly Dress neckline can be worn both on and off the shoulders…all depending on the occasion. With the fabric being so clingy to the body, I do think some ladies would prefer to wear a little shapewear to help create a smooth sleek silhouette.

img_8949 img_8943Being a collector of vintage leaf print motifs, it was so much fun to accessorize the Butterfly Dress. I immediately knew my vintage maple leaf celluloid necklace would match perfectly with the colours in falling leaves print along with the Remix It Girl Heels in mustard. Of course not everyone has this necklace so an easy and inexpensive alternative are colourful plastic bangles from local thrift stores or check out Splendette and Bow & Crossbones for wonderful reproduction fakelite bangles.

img_8937 img_8936There is nothing more special than finding gorgeous designs with motifs that one holds close to their heart. The lovely Butterfly Dress also comes in solid colours and two more fabulous prints. If that isn’t enough, PUG recently released this flirty style in the Butterfly Top!

Magic For Tall & Petite

The past few months, my fascination with trousers has grown into an obsession with each new addition. Since their release, I have heard everyone raving and looking phenomenal in their Pinup Girl Clothing Doris Trousers. The tall gals were all thrilled to find trousers that worked for their height so I was convinced there was no way they would work for us petite ladies. Instead, I just longed for these beauties from the sidelines and hoped someday for a petite version. Fortunately one faithful day, I reached out in the Pinup Girl Customer Lounge to see if any petites ladies had successfully tried the Doris Trousers? After receiving glowing recommendations from my fellow shorties, I took the plunge in ordering the Doris Trouser in Chocolate Brown Crepe along with the fabulous Malia Top in Dark Green.

Available in sizes XS-4X ~ MSRP Doris Trousers $128; Malia Top $80

img_8983Being a long time Pinup Girl Clothing customer, I am always grateful for their custom size charts for each garment. It truly helps take so much of the guess work out of shopping online. With my waist (28″) and hips (42″) being a little larger post surgery, I followed the size chart and ordered a Medium in the Doris Trousers. Despite my bust (36″) and waist (28″) being larger than the recommended measurements for the Malia Top, I opted to stay with a size Small since there’s quite a bit of stretch to the fabric. Never was there more anticipation and fear of complete disappointment. Low and behold, the Doris Trousers fit surprisingly well even with my short torso thanks to the elasticized back. Of course they are quite long for me at 5′-4″ tall but I can easily get them hemmed or wear higher heels. Although I already own the Malia Top in two other colours, the Dark Green appears to run a bit smaller with less stretch to the fabric. I definitely recommend to size up for this particular colourway. These 40’s inspired Doris Trousers are made from pebble crepe and fully lined with a soft knit fabric. They feature a high waistband with back elastic for a nipped in waist, with gorgeous pleated wide legs and back zipper closure. The Malia Top is also 40s inspired featuring a striking keyhole design with underbust gathers, 3/4 length sleeves and back zipper closure.

img_8981 img_8987Although I am a diehard 50s’ fashion gal, I have come to also love the 40’s over the last few years. The slimmer silhouettes really lends well to my professional work attire and still has a strong feminine appeal. The Doris Trouser and Malia Top are a powerhouse when paired together and equally as fabulous when worn apart. The fabulous crepe fabric feels like you are wearing pyjamas; draping beautifully off the body and is like walking on a cloud. Thanks to the super innovative elasticized back waistband, there is no waist gaping and it actually cinches in your waist without constricting. There is a reason why I now have the Malia Top in three colourways, they are magnificent! Initially I thought they were a little pricey for a top but after purchasing one during a sale, I immediately saw how much detail went into this design. They are super figure flattering, really comfortable and versatile to match with almost any bottom.

img_8980 img_8985When it comes to accessorizing this fabulous pairing, I opted to keep with the 40’s inspiration by adding some vintage Bakelite bangles in earth tones. For us petite ladies, wearing higher heels creates the illusion of longer and slimmer silhouette.

img_8995 img_8993The love affair with swing trousers is stronger than ever…and the Doris Trousers possess some kind of magic in them for both tall and petite ladies. Just as I have with the Malia Tops, I will be scooping up more colourways in the Doris Trousers. When you find something that fits so well, you fill up your closet with fabulous staples.

Fan Favorites ~ Mix & Match Staples

When our favorite pinup brands release sneak previews of their new collections, it is nearly impossible to control our excitement over the designs that make us totally swoon. One of this season’s hottest new must have is Pinup Girl Clothing’s Harley Top; inspired by their original fan favorite Harley Dress. With mix and match separates being the key essentials for summer, no pinup wardrobe would be complete without the versatile High Waisted Shorts in Candy Stripe.

Available in sizes XS-4X in a variety of colours & prints ~ MSRP $62

IMG_8351There was much debate when the Harley Tops were released about proper sizing and fit, which was quickly addressed by Laura at PUG, “these tops are designed to be a looser overall fit”. That being said, staying with your normal size is recommended therefore I went with my usual size Small. When it came to the High Waisted Shorts, my measurements (waist 27” hips 39-40”) put me directly in the size Medium range. Needless to say, I was super excited when this duo arrived and couldn’t wait to try them on. The Harley top fit wonderfully, I really enjoy the relaxed fit very much and it works perfectly with my favorite strapless bra. I was very taken back by the fact that the High Waisted Shorts fit like a glove with ample room for comfort and the perfect length in the rise despite my short torso. The Harley Top features a unique high neckline with gathers, side bust darting and inverted back zipper closure. The High Waisted Shorts feature an empire waistline with a slight curve design, an elastic back waistband for flexibility and to prevent that dreaded gaping, side slit pockets, a stitched inseam detail and back zip closure.

IMG_8352 IMG_8364Pinup Girl Clothing is truly unique in the fact that they listen to what their customers want and when their fans begged for tops in the signature Harley design, they delivered! The Harley Tops are extremely versatile due to the modest, yet classic design which can be worn as is or tucked in and pairs perfectly with shorts, skirts, and pants. I personally love the looser fit very much; sometimes we just don’t want to feel constricted all day long in form fitting clothing. The High Waisted Shorts really surprised me the most as I always struggle with off the rack sizing being too long in the rise with my short torso and never designed to accommodate an extreme waist to hip ratio. The back elastic waistband is ideal for those of us who struggle with our waist being one size and our hips another. The candy stripe print is absolutely delightful and coordinates effortlessly with a multitude of options. The Harley Top and High Waisted Shorts paired together are the epitome of summer fabulousness; you will turn heads wherever you go!

IMG_8362 IMG_8370For a simple on the go look, I paired the Harley Top in red with the High Waisted Short in Candy Stripe as my main ensemble and accessorized with Gene’s Gin & Tonic hair candy by Belle Blossoms, lime green mixed with bamboo bangles and Dennise Wedges in red by B.A.I.T. It is easy to play up the colours in the delicious candy stripe print with fun bangle bracelets and a handbag to match. IMG_8358 IMG_8356Mix and match staples like the Harley Top and High Waisted Shorts are the key to making your hard earned dollar go further by creating endless style combinations. Pinup Girl Clothing continues to deliver what their fans love and we are all looking forward to seeing more colourways being released in these two incredibly versatile pinup staples.
