Let Your Dreams Take Flight

It has been a very emotional couple weeks with the loss of our beloved Zina…I miss her dearly but know she is in a better place doing what she loves, chasing squirrels. ❤ Thank you all for your condolences and words of comfort. I had to take a quick break last week from blogging while organizing a Valentine’s charity bakesale for work. The event was a great success and we raised a lot of money in support of SickKids Foundation. Getting back to blogging is always like a breath of fresh air as I truly enjoy sharing fabulous finds with all of you.

One of my most recent acquisition has caused quite a stir in our community and sold out almost immediately. The Trashy Diva Lovebirds print has been highly sought after and is the very first “heritage” print to be brought back, as voted on by their customers. I personally am beyond excited to have a second chance at owning this stunning print since I was late to the party discovering Trashy Diva only in recent years. The Trashy Diva Hopscotch Dress in Lovebirds literally flew off the shelves. With the Canadian dollar being so weak in comparison to the US, I have had to be much more cautious with purchases. The high exchange rate and costly shipping adds up real fast so purchasing directly from Trashy Diva is sadly out of the question right now. Luckily for us Canadians, we have the wonderful Retroglam who continuously delivers excellent customer service and affordable shipping options. Immediately I reached out to my friends at Retroglam to acquire the beloved Trashy Diva Hopscotch Lovebirds Dress.

Available in sizes 0-24 ~ MSRP $183USD

img_8960Trashy Diva takes out the guesswork when it comes to finding your proper size by providing individual sizing charts for each style and print they release. Consistently I find myself wearing a size 6 in their clothing and fully intended to order the same with the Hopscotch Lovebirds Dress but it was already sold out at Retroglam. Thankfully Wendy (the owner of Retroglam) and I are not far in size, so she recommended sizing down to the 4 since there is some stretch in the fabric. I am so glad I did, the size 4 fit wonderfully and the 6 would have definitely been too big especially in the shoulders. The Hopscotch Dress features a peter pan collar with rhinestone buttons, faux cap sleeves, a fabulous back cut out, circle skirt and invisible side zipper closure. Made from a lovely stretch rayon adorned with blue and pink Lovebirds, birdcages and floral novelty print. At 5′-4″ tall, the hemline falls just below the knees.

img_8955 img_8956What I know for sure is Trashy Diva designs instantly become collectors items since they are all limited edition prints and quickly sell out almost every time. Fortunately for us newer customers, they heard our cries to re-release some of their most sought after Heritage prints and the darling Lovebirds was voters choice. Trashy Diva offers a variety of styles and separates with each release, allowing their customers to select the best design to flatter their individual body type. For me, I was instantly smitten with the Hopscotch due to the classic look of front buttons with a hint of sparkle and the unique back cutout which will really showcase my tattoos. The stretch rayon feels silky, luxurious and so very comfortable. It is one of those dresses that you don’t ever want to take off. The Hopscotch Lovebirds Dress can effortlessly go from day to evening, you don’t even have to change a thing. The versatility of this classic novelty print works for all occasions.

img_8962Novelty prints lend well to choosing which accessories to accent your look. Try bringing out the subtle colours such as the blue and pink in the Lovebirds print. I paired the Hopscotch Dress with soft pink rose earrings, a mix of pink/blue bangles accented by the Splendette Black Starbust bangle and B.A.I.T Ida Fair Pink. To define your waist, try adding a thin belt in pink or blue.

img_8968 img_8970Sometimes we are forced to rethink our buying habits to ensure we stay within our budgets and still add lovely new pretties to our wardrobe. Whether you buy directly from Trashy Diva or one of their wholesale partners like Retroglam, you are supporting two wonderful small businesses. Don’t miss out on this once in a lifestime second chance of owning the darling Lovebirds, there are plenty of styles still available at Retroglam and Trashy Diva.

Floral Obsession Gone Awry

There’s no secret when it comes to my obsession with floral print, it’s undeniable to say the least. Ever since Pinup Girl Clothing released the Blue & Violet Floral print in the Amelia, I’ve had an obsession for everything in this print. I was so excited when I saw the Birdie in the Blue Floral but it quickly lead to heartbreak as this was an exclusive item for a retailer in Australia. PUG eventually released the Dee Dee in this very same print and opted to sneak it into my cart to give it a try.

Available in sizes XS-2X in a variety of colors & prints ~ MSRP $118USD

PCDeeDeeWhen I originally ordered the Dee Dee dress, my measurements were 36-29-42 and went with a Medium. The Dee Dee features a round Peter Pan collar with matching decorative buttons. Since my bust was a tad bit smaller than the medium, it was necessary to wear a good push up bra to fill it out completely. The matching belt accentuates your nipped in waist and compliments the full swing skirt perfectly. It features a side zipper with cap sleeves that provide ample rooms for your arms. I believe the Dee Dee looks best without a petticoat or the PUG canvas underskirt for minimal volume. The overall design is classic and timeless falling perfectly below the knee.

PCDeeDee2It seems I have a difficult time with dresses designed with a high neckline since I have a rather short torso and always find myself having to get rather costly alterations done. Once I lost weight, the Dee Dee no longer fit and unfortunately had to let her go to a better home. Quite possibly if I sized down to a Small, these issues would be resolved as the waist was much too loose and the bust was gaping considerably. I’ve seen the Dee Dee look so incredibly fabulous on other lovely ladies and so disappointed it didn’t quite work for me. I believe this style is best suited for those with a normal to long torso.

(Keep in mind, the review photos were taken before I lost weight therefore the fit is great with the proper push up bra.)

PCDeeDee3The Dee Dee is perfect for every occasion, I wore it to the office and receive many compliments. Dress is up with a set of pearls and white Mary-Jane heels. As mentioned earlier, the PUG canvas underskirt would give the right amount of volume for the swing skirt. Adding a lovely rose hair flower would really add to the ensemble beautifully.

PCDeeDee1Although the Dee Dee didn’t work out, I know it would be amazing for those ladies with a different body type than me. I adored her and truly wished it was a better match but I know she’s being loved very much by her new owner. Hopefully PUG decides to release this lovely blue floral print in another swing dress in the future or maybe by some luck I can get my hands on the exclusive Birdie dress someday.

Flower Power: Miss Candyfloss Nima Sue Review by Sarah Dietze

I’m a sucker for sweepstakes. The chance of winning, no matter how slim, and the opportunity to daydream about becoming a winner, is too much to resist. Until recently, my last sweepstakes win was a Carmen Sandiego CD-ROM from Wendy’s (I’m dating myself, but still). After entering dress, jewelry and gift card contests from nearly every pin up retailer on Facebook, I was starting to get discouraged. I wanted to win something this millennium.

Pic 1Imagine my surprise when Miss Candyfloss contacted me as the winner of their most recent contest for the Nima Sue dress! I found out after attending the Blackhawks Stanley Cup parade as it passed by my office, so I like to think the Cup brought me good luck 🙂 I responded to Noemi at Miss Candyfloss immediately and wanted to share a little bit about what makes this dress special.

Pic 2The print and color of this dress remind me of the Hell Bunny Mayday Dress, one of my favorite dresses, so it’s perhaps not surprising that I loved the fabric as soon as I put this dress on. I thought the light blue and baby pink might be too much in person, but they’re muted yet springlike.

Pic 3The dress features rushing along the bust, contrast pink trim and a side zipper. The halter straps fasten with three fabric-covered buttons, a nice change from the usual ties. The small fit perfectly – my measurements are 35″-28″-38″ so I lucked out and didn’t have to guess when it came to sizing. The length is perfect for tall gals. I’m 5’9″ and didn’t feel like I was wearing a mini dress, as is often the case with reproduction vintage dresses.

Pic 4While I wish the dress had a full circle rather than a swing skirt, it’s still perfect for twirling. One chiffon petticoat provided enough oomph without making the skirt too poofy. Given the print, I kept accessories simple, but couldn’t resist continuing the floral theme with pink floral earrings and a white hair flower.

The Nima Sue retails for approximately $135 USD and is currently available in XS-4XL from Miss Candyfloss!

A Little Birdy Told Me…

Often times I find myself shying away from bold funky prints simply because I don’t feel every person can pull them off well. I am more a “playing it safe” kind of gal and prefer to mix solids with bright colored accessories to make a statement. But, there’s always exceptions to the rule right? Well I couldn’t help but fall head over heels in love with the Heartbreaker Monique Birdy Aqua Dress as it was just too damn cute to resist. As soon as JBR Clothing announced it’s arrival, I placed my order.

Available in sizes XS-2X in a variety of colors & prints ~ MSRP $80-96USD

HBMonique3I have to compliment Heartbreaker on their sizing consistency throughout their various styles, if you follow the size chart you are sure to get the right fit. Being my first Monique dress, I opted to order it in Medium based on my experience with the Beverly, Aimee, and so on. To my surprise, the bust was more snug due to the high bateau neckline and side zipper. I would highly recommend sizing up if you are considerably busty; go by your biggest measurements as the cotton has no stretch. Please bear in mind, my bust is 36″ which is the max for the size Medium. The Monique features the signature Heartbreaker A-line style, perfect for those days when you’re not feeling the wiggle or circle dresses. The matching tie belt is perfect to give the illusion of a nipped in waist. At 5′-4″ tall, the skirt length falls perfectly below the knee and pairs well with heels or flats.

HBMonique4What I adore the most goes without saying, the cute little bird print; you can’t not be happy while wearing this dress. I opt to wear mine on the days I feel lack luster getting ready for work as it always brightens my day. The Monique is very comfortable and suitable for many occasions. I truly enjoy the A-line styles as they are versatile for everyday wear. Of all the dresses in my closet, my Heartbreaker Aimee, Beverly and now Monique get the most love.

HBMonique5Accessorizing the Beverly is easy…pair it with your favorite pumps or flats and you’re ready to go. I find less is more when you’re wearing a bold print. A little hair flower will add a finishing touch and not take away from your ensemble. The Monique in Birdy Aqua looks fabulous with nude pumps and a little cardigan on those cooler nights. Two of my favorites colors are teal and orange, who knew they would look so perfect together!

HBMoniqueIf the bold prints are not your cup of tea, the Monique is also available in 30 different colors and prints! There is definitely something for everyone. Don’t be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone once in a while; you’ll never get the chance to fall in love with some of the most amazing fashions.
