Let Your Dreams Take Flight

It has been a very emotional couple weeks with the loss of our beloved Zina…I miss her dearly but know she is in a better place doing what she loves, chasing squirrels. ❀ Thank you all for your condolences and words of comfort. I had to take a quick break last week from blogging while organizing a Valentine’s charity bakesale for work. The event was a great success and we raised a lot of money in support of SickKids Foundation. Getting back to blogging is always like a breath of fresh air as I truly enjoy sharing fabulous finds with all of you.

One of my most recent acquisition has caused quite a stir in our community and sold out almost immediately. The Trashy Diva Lovebirds print has been highly sought after and is the very first “heritage” print to be brought back, as voted on by their customers. I personally am beyond excited to have a second chance at owning this stunning print since I was late to the party discovering Trashy Diva only in recent years. The Trashy Diva Hopscotch Dress in Lovebirds literally flew off the shelves. With the Canadian dollar being so weak in comparison to the US, I have had to be much more cautious with purchases. The high exchange rate and costly shipping adds up real fast so purchasing directly from Trashy Diva is sadly out of the question right now. Luckily for us Canadians, we have the wonderful Retroglam who continuously delivers excellent customer service and affordable shipping options. Immediately I reached out to my friends at Retroglam to acquire the beloved Trashy Diva Hopscotch Lovebirds Dress.

Available in sizes 0-24 ~ MSRP $183USD

img_8960Trashy Diva takes out the guesswork when it comes to finding your proper size by providing individual sizing charts for each style and print they release. Consistently I find myself wearing a size 6 in their clothing and fully intended to order the same with the Hopscotch Lovebirds Dress but it was already sold out at Retroglam. Thankfully Wendy (the owner of Retroglam) and I are not far in size, so she recommended sizing down to the 4 since there is some stretch in the fabric. I am so glad I did, the size 4 fit wonderfully and the 6 would have definitely been too big especially in the shoulders. The Hopscotch Dress features a peter pan collar with rhinestone buttons, faux cap sleeves, a fabulous back cut out, circle skirt and invisible side zipper closure. Made from a lovely stretch rayon adorned with blue and pink Lovebirds, birdcages and floral novelty print. At 5′-4″ tall, the hemline falls just below the knees.

img_8955 img_8956What I know for sure is Trashy Diva designs instantly become collectors items since they are all limited edition prints and quickly sell out almost every time. Fortunately for us newer customers, they heard our cries to re-release some of their most sought after Heritage prints and the darling Lovebirds was voters choice. Trashy Diva offers a variety of styles and separates with each release, allowing their customers to select the best design to flatter their individual body type. For me, I was instantly smitten with the Hopscotch due to the classic look of front buttons with a hint of sparkle and the unique back cutout which will really showcase my tattoos. The stretch rayon feels silky, luxurious and so very comfortable. It is one of those dresses that you don’t ever want to take off. The Hopscotch Lovebirds Dress can effortlessly go from day to evening, you don’t even have to change a thing. The versatility of this classic novelty print works for all occasions.

img_8962Novelty prints lend well to choosing which accessories to accent your look. Try bringing out the subtle colours such as the blue and pink in the Lovebirds print. I paired the Hopscotch Dress with soft pink rose earrings, a mix of pink/blue bangles accented by the Splendette Black Starbust bangle and B.A.I.T Ida Fair Pink. To define your waist, try adding a thin belt in pink or blue.

img_8968 img_8970Sometimes we are forced to rethink our buying habits to ensure we stay within our budgets and still add lovely new pretties to our wardrobe. Whether you buy directly from Trashy Diva or one of their wholesale partners like Retroglam, you are supporting two wonderful small businesses. Don’t miss out on this once in a lifestime second chance of owning the darling Lovebirds, there are plenty of styles still available at Retroglam and Trashy Diva.

Destination ~ The Tropics

First of all, I want to thank each and everyone of you for the outpouring of support and well wishes during my recovery. I am profoundly humbled by the loving family that makes up our pinup community after sharing my health struggles over the past several months. I am improving a little every day and couldn’t be more excited about getting back to blogging. Please join me in thanking all of our wonderful guest writers Lark, Emily, Samantha, Carrie-Ann, and Patty. You ladies did such a phenomenal job!!!

Today’s feature is a continuation of my new found love of vintage inspired maxi dresses. It is quite funny how our tastes change as we evolve in our journey of self confidence. For years, I avoided maxi dresses like the plague as when I first tried a few on at a local mall years ago….they made my body look shapeless, like a huge sack of potatoes. From that point on, I steered clear of any long dresses as I was positive they weren’t designed to flatter curvy bodies. It wasn’t until I saw my best friend Amber looking absolutely fabulous wearing 40’s inspired maxi dresses by Trashy Diva, that I started to reconsider trying them again. I finally set my heart on the Trashy Diva L’Amour Long Dress in Cactus Rouge and waited for Black Friday to scoop it up on sale at Catnip.

Available in sizes 2-16 ~ MSRP $216USD

IMG_7772One of the best thing about Trashy Diva sizing, they provide accurate individual size charts for each style and print. Based on my measurements, (bust 36″, waist 27″, hips 39″) I fell perfectly in line with the size 6, which was thankfully still available at Catnip. I was thrilled that Catnip offered very reasonable International Shipping, every little of savings helps when the currency exchange is so bad for us Canadians right now. When the L’Amour Long Dress arrived, I couldn’t have been more excited to see how the 40’s style maxi would look on me. I was immediately smitten, it fit my body effortlessly and draped so beautifully. The sizing couldn’t have been more perfect; the 3 tier adjustable button straps allows one to easily shorten the length. The L’Amour Long Dress features keyhole center bust with a thin drawstring, 3/4″ wide adjustable straps, side smocked panels, ankle length full skirt and back zipper closure. At 5′-4″, I shortened the straps on the 2nd button to drape ankle length.

IMG_7767 IMG_7770What I adore most about Trashy Diva is that they continually offer such a variety of gorgeous prints that flatter all women no matter their shape or size. The cactus rouge print really resonated with me as I love the feel of tropics so much but this one is more subtle in comparison to most Hawaiian inspired motifs. The L’Amour Long Dress truly feels like lounge wear; the way it accentuates your body and the fluidity of the draping makes it feel completely effortless. You all know that I am a diehard 50’s fashion lover but I am really coming around to appreciate the 40’s more and more. The slimmer silhouettes like the L’Amour really emphasize the female figure wonderfully and lends well to all body types. Trashy Diva is very unique in the sense that they have a variety of staple designs and continually release new prints/colourways throughout the year. They use the most beautiful quality rayon fabrics that are known to stand the test of time if properly cared for. Never did I think I would be so madly in love with a maxi dress, the L’Amour Long has really dazzled me with its charm and elegance.

IMG_7782The L’Amour Long Dress is one of those versatile ensembles that can easily be worn from day to evening. By adding a cute cropped cardigan, it will allow this look to be suitable for any occasion. Personally, I love to play up the tropical motif of the cactus rouge print by adding simple wooden bamboo bangles (sadly I forgot in these photos). Although you can’t see my footwear peeking out from underneath, I chose to pair the maxi with cute white espadrilles for a nice summery vibe. For a little more waist definitely or to break up the print, add a contrasting thin belt.

IMG_7775 IMG_7773It goes to show you that quality made clothing will always outshine the competition. Trashy Diva maxi dresses accentuate the figure flawlessly and are worth every penny of their investment. If you are unfamiliar with Trashy Diva’s popularity, the demand for discontinued prints are insanely sought after and collectors will snap them up in a blink of an eye therefore retaining their value even secondhand.

Peacock Perfection

Believe it or not, the one brand of repro inspired clothing that has never been a part of my wardrobe until now is Trashy Diva. It is not because I don’t love their designs considering I have been lusting over their dresses for years but simply never took the plunge in making a purchase. One thing I have noticed about Trashy Diva, their stuff sells out quickly and often only available one time around so make sure you don’t procrastinate too long or you’ll miss out. When Trashy Diva released the Peacock Lilian dress, I was over the moon excited but they quickly sold out everywhere so I had conceded it just wasn’t meant to be. By some stroke of luck or it was a plain miracle, Rowena/Retroglam.com recently restocked the Peacock Lilian dress in my size…it was fate!

Available in sizes 2-18 ~ MSRP $173CAD

IMG_3240Since I had no experience with Trashy Diva sizing, I relied on the assistance of Wendy at Rowena seeing as we are both similar in size and based on the feedback from her customers. It appears the Peacock Lilian runs one size smaller than the other Trashy Diva designs which are similar in cut therefore I went with a size 6. My initial worry was that the shoulders might be too wide but thankfully the size 6 fit wonderfully. With the Peacock Lilian being inspired by the era of the 1940’s, the style is meant to be figure flattering and softly drape over the hips. The Lilian also has a strong Asian influence with the breathtaking peacock embroidery and large Mandarin collar which can be worn up or neatly folded down. It also comes with a matching black grommet belt to cinch the waist and features decorative covered buttons on the center bodice. At 5′-4″ tall, the skirt (25″) falls a couple inches below the knees.

IMG_3271 IMG_3273Most of you already know how much I adore everything that features a peacock motif as they are truly one of the most majestic creatures on earth. The Peacock Lilian is such a classic design with eye catching embroidery sure to garner lots of attention. The fabric feels so luxurious and drapes beautifully to flatter a curvy figure. Although I normally shy away from Asian inspired high on the neck collars, I couldn’t help but put that fear aside in this case as the peacock design was too tempting to resist. It is no secret that Trashy Diva dresses are quite an investment, I have to say their quality appears to be in line with their pricing.

IMG_3264The Peacock Lilian makes a statement in itself therefore accessorizing should be kept simple and elegant. I paired mine with a lovely peacock feather hair fascinator and my Chelsea Crew T-strap heels in black. If it were a bit cooler out, I would recommend wearing some back seamed stockings to create a timeless look.

IMG_3261After years of window shopping at Trashy Diva, I am now a proud owner of one of their fabulous designs and I look forward to adding more to my wardrobe in the future. The Lilian Peacock eluded me for several years now but after much persistence, the stars finally aligned. Now I have to continue my mission to find the Trashy Diva Yellow Maria dress in my size…

What dresses are you hoping to find before they are gone forever?

Trashy Diva Jenny Dress: Vintage Class mixed with Comfort by Mai Tai Miranda

I have so much love for Trashy Diva clothing that I own at least ten pieces from this remarkable New Orleans based company. Since we are getting into the colder months, especially here in Canada it was timely to review one of my favorites, the long sleeved Jenny dress.

1441513_10151998089792604_1671267710_nThe Jenny dress comes in 3 colors (Black, Military, and Bordeaux) and two sleeve lengths! For me, I just had to choose the Bordeaux as the color is so lush and rich. The dress is a nice thick knit of rayon, nylon, and spandex which allows for a lot of stretch and beautiful drape. Of course it is also super comfortable and cozy for the many damp days here on the west coast of British Columbia.

The design of the dress is reminiscent of the 1940s with its gathered puff sleeves and strategic pleating/darts on the bust which are echoed in the skirt. The skirt is a full a-line and very flattering. The dress is easy to put on over the head with a small side zip from the waist to the sleeve.

1418405_10152003480502604_1101551544_nThe style of the dress allows for easy accessorizing, since it was a sunny autumn day I chose to add a skinny leopard print belt, a vintage bakelite bangle, and a beige snood (hand crocheted from Planet Pinup on etsy). With the addition of my black heeled oxfords I hoped to pull my vintage look together. This dress can be easily dressed up with a sparkly vintage brooch, some killer heels, and a pair of Cuban seamed stockings. I have winterized it quite a few times by pairing with thick tights of different colors and a cardigan.

I love vintage clothing but it is rare to find my size as being a modern 14/16 makes me a vintage 20/22. In terms of sizing, this is a very generous cut compared to other Trashy Diva offerings. You can safely size down from what the chart suggests as there is so much stretch. I usually wear a 16 in Trashy Diva and this one is a 12! This is a very good dress for all bust sizes (I am a 36G/GG) as the style works due to the darting. This dress is one of their more expensive and I picked it up during their online Black Friday sale last year, but most of my Trashy Diva dresses have been purchased from Rowena in Edmonton, they have a few styles (not this one though) on their website www.retroglam.com.

1414767_10152003480497604_1411220381_nI am very lucky to have a fabulous photographer residing in my town and she produced these beautiful images (she is gorgeous pinup herself). Please check out Dawn Mahaney Photography on Facebook.
