Viva Rockabilly Weekend 20th Anniversary

It is hard to believe that we are less than one month away from the Viva Rockabilly Weekend 20th Anniversary!!! This will be our fourth year attending and it will likely be our very last so we are going to enjoy every minute the weekend has to offer. As many of you know, a lot of planning goes into preparing for the big event and it can be a very daunting task for people attending for the first time. Over the years I have shared helpful tips on what to do, what to see, how to pack and much more! If you think I was being sarcastic about outfit planning being done on a spreadsheet, think again! I am busy getting my outfit schedule completed as it truly eliminates the last minute stress on what to pack and wear each day. Luckily I shopped my closet for all outfits this year and simply picked up a few inexpensive vintage accessories from Etsy and Ebay that I can mix and match. Don’t fret if you feel like you have nothing to wear, Viva goers wear jeans and t-shirts to evening gowns…everyone is welcome!!!

Check out our past Viva blog posts that you may find helpful in your preparations for Viva 20 and/or in the years to follow.

Viva 18 Recap ~ Part Two

With the Viva Rockabilly Weekend being only four days loaded with event from morning to night, there’s just not enough time to get everything in. If you’re like us, we have some absolute musts on our list and the rest we just go with the flow as there’s never a shortage of things to do. My husband always says Viva is not a vacation since its go, go, go…for the entire weekend.  That said, it’s SO much fun and I wouldn’t trade the whole experience for anything.

Everything ramps up for Saturday, as this is the all-day car show where more than 15,000 people attend. My morning started off with Madison Jane who created the most spectacular vintage hairstyle with inspiration from the classic Doris Mayday. Afterwards I met up with one of the gals from Classic Glamour Dolls for makeup; both ladies seriously glammed me up to the nines! Before heading out to the car show we ventured up to the Orleans Bowling Alley to meet with Dre, a photographer shooting for Tattoo Life Magazine. This is where I met the ever so lovely Stephanie Jay who was also a part of the feature. We shot indoors briefly then headed out to the courtyard to wrap up the impromptu photo session. I’m super excited to see how they turned out; the couple I saw from the back of her camera looked incredible.

2015-04-22 18.58.03_resized 2015-04-22 18.59.48_resized PinUpPersuasionFinally we were off to the car show! The weather was perfect this year… lots of sun, not too hot and a strong breeze to keep things comfortable. As soon as we arrived, we spotted Miss Victory Violet who was campaigning for the title of Miss Viva Las Vegas so I said a quick hello since she was a busy bee the whole weekend. Her hard work paid off as she was crowned the winner later that afternoon.

Viva18h Of course my next plan of action was to shop the vendors before all the great stuff was gone.  It was mind blowing how much the car show has grown over the past few years; there was a least double the amount of booths and classic cars from our first Viva in 2012! Once we got in a little shopping, we hit the vintage cars area for a few photos before heading in for a quick lunch and outfit change.  One thing I quickly had to get used to was having my photo taken by complete strangers whenever we stopped by one of the marvelous vintage cars.

Viva18k Viva18iAfter lunch, I bumped into the fabulous Jennifer (A Vintage Vanity), Jael and Colleen once again so we seized the opportunity to finally snap a photo together. They are some of the sweetest gals and I was so excited to run into them many times over the course of the weekend. We headed back out to the car show with Mae and Shawn in the afternoon for a little more shopping and to see the rest of the vintage cars.

Viva18l Viva18mSaturday evening is when everyone goes all out, wearing their MOST glamourous attire. It’s like a scene out of an old Hollywood film; it’s a true vintage lover’s dream.  The night began with one of our beloved events, the Burlesque Competition…where we ran into the darling Eleanor Paige and Dottie Minx. The winner Tosca Tosca seriously brought it home with her spectacular performance.

20150404_195001 20150404_194036Later, we met up with Amber, Lucas and Julie for a quiet dinner at the Prime Rib Loft. Before we turned in for the night, we made sure to go to the Viva photobooth as we missed out on this in previous years. Thankfully I got at least one photo with my darling Ashleeta that weekend.  20150404_234619 FCB44GC2ND-LSunday

As the final day of the Weekender, Sunday is the infamous Pool Party…where attendees take the opportunity to unwind and spend the day poolside. Before making our way there, we headed upstairs to the vendors one last time to snag some last minute bargains. I made out like a bandit and was very pleased with all my loot from the week.

20150405_091758_resized_1 IMG_20150405_173935Now this is where I turned into a ball of nerves… not only was I getting ready for a day by the pool but I was a participant in the Women’s Vintage Swimsuit Competition!  Seriously…reality was setting in very quickly. Luckily I was able to reutilize my fabulous hair and makeup from the day before, two less things to worry about. I got on my 1950’s Catalina Cocktail Swimsuit, loaded up on SPH100 sunscreen…it was time to rock and roll! We arrived early enough to get lounge chairs and enjoy the sunshine when it finally came out. The extremely high winds most of the weekend were absolutely insane.

20150405_125627 20150405_125631I bumped into one of my blog readers Stephanie while waiting in line at the concession, it’s too bad I didn’t have my phone at the time to snap a photo. She was an absolutely sweetheart and fellow Canadian. The whole afternoon was so wonderful. I met the lovely ladies Cha Cha and Val from Dirty Mistress Events who were sitting behind us and also made sure to get a photo with the adorable Acid Doll as we hadn’t done so every time we saw each other. She and her husband are so incredibly kind; I took the opportunity to practice my French when we chatted. Mae came to join us shortly before the competition; luckily I would have her at my side for support as we were both selected.

20150405_130815 Viva18n Viva18oIt was time…the contestants had to meet up at the Lucy B tent at 3:15pm to check in and get our numbers. The judges couldn’t have selected a more incredible group of ladies; everyone was so sweet and just there to have a good time. Before the contest began, we had our photos taken as a group and chatted about each other’s magnificent vintage swimsuits. Honestly, I wasn’t all that nervous and simply relishing in the moment to be a part of this landmark event. Each contestant would be asked a question while up on stage and to talk about their swimsuit with the judges. Maybe it was just ill luck but my question was about my favorite music of the era, something that I am not at all familiar with. I didn’t panic, I answered simply that I come to Viva for the fashion which led into being a blogger…and the rest is history. It was so amazing having my own personal cheering squad in the audience, Ashleeta, A Vintage Vanity, Jael, Colleen, my husband and all of the new people that I had recently met that day…I can’t thank you all enough! xoxo I didn’t place in the finals but honestly I didn’t care. Just being up there on stage was life changing, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Viva18p Viva18r DSC_5529-L DSC_5534-LSunday evening is usually very quiet around the Orleans, many attendees leave throughout the day or simply resting from partying hard all weekend. We met up with our friends for a delicious meal at the Canal Street Restaurant, this was by far my favorite and the most delicious meal of the weekend. Afterwards, we changed into some more comfortable attire and headed to the cinema to see Fast & The Furious 7 just the two of us. We must have been exhausted from the long day in the sun, both falling asleep partially through the movie.

20150405_205601_resized_1 20150405_205640_resized_1Viva 18 was by far the most incredible time we had in the three years we’ve attended! The whole weekend was very relaxed…seeing so many familiar faces…spending oodles of time with friends and making some new ones as well….who can ask for more? Although we won’t be attending next year’s festivities, we have plans to return for the 20th Anniversary!

Are You Ready for Viva 18???

10372784_10151817706722537_7402826345039422455_nWith nearly only two weeks to go until Viva, many of you are in full panic mode about being “ready”. This will be our third time attending and I can honestly say that incredibly stressful feeling is completely understandable but with the proper planning techniques, does not have to be the case. Some might think making a spreadsheet for what to wear each day is going overboard but it’s how my friend Amber and I prevent from over packing, ensures we have everything needed for each outfit and takes the guess work out of what to wear every morning. Besides the lengthy process of coordination outfits, there are many questions on what to do at Viva, how it works, and so on. Last year I wrote a four part series and would like to share them again for those attending for the very first time. To my surprise and excitement, the organizers of VLV Rockabilly Weekender have kindly showcased these on the website in the INFO Section, along with the Rockabilly Socialite who has been attending since day one.

For those of you haven’t read last years’ features, you check them out here:

Now some of you might still be saying…outfit spreadsheet…REALLY? Yes, I am 100% serious! We started ours a couple months ago and have been adding as we go. This helps you determine early on if you have enough looks depending on how often you wish to change and what little bits to pick up along the way. Bear in mind, this is by no means set in stone and you can decide to wear something else at any point in the weekend. Here is our schedule for last year’s VLV 17:

Some of you might be wondering why I combine it together with my friend Amber and the answer is, we share accessories and handbags on different nights. We have similar tastes in vintage but own very different pieces in our personal collections. For example, I have amassed a variety of lucite handbags where as Amber has a large array of vintage beaded handbags. She also has an extensive collection of vintage evening jewelry where I honestly have none. Attending the Weekender is already quite extravagant with flights, accommodations and tickets, the last thing everyone needs is to spend a ton of money on one time use clothing and accessories on top of it all!

PhotoGrid_1426427767539The Weekender is about having fun, seeing old friends and making new ones…wearing fabulous clothing is just the icing on the cake. No matter what you wear, no one will judge you as they are there to have a good time like everyone else. If you happen to see me, apparently I’m hard to miss with the bright red hair (so I’m told) PLEASE come to say hello! That would truly make me super happy to meet all of you 🙂

Part Three – What I Wore at Viva 17

Well ladies and gents, we’re back from our incredibly memorable trip to the Viva Rockabilly Weekend and have lots to share with all of you! The weather was absolutely perfect; it was in the high 80s all week and zero humidity which was a huge relief from what we are accustomed to.  Needless to say, it was tough coming home to low 50s and rain. The week flew by, it was over much too soon. This post will feature the outfits I wore, followed by one last entry to highlight the events of the week. Now let’s talk about fashion…

This year my goal was to wear mostly vintage since I have amassed quite a collection over the last year. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing vintage reproduction at Viva, it is all about personal choice. No one will make you feel lesser for what you choose to wear, it’s about having fun and ogling beautiful fashions from women around the world.

We arrived on Wednesday to get acclimated to the time change and take in some sights before Viva began. Originally I had planned to wear the PUG Jenny in melted cherry print but my husband voted for the Unique Vintage Coming Up Roses Strapless Swing Dress since it is his personal favorite. I will be doing a review on this dress in the future, so stay tuned for that. My goal was to accessorize every outfit since this was something I always seem to be lacking on. In this case, I paired the UV Dress with a vintage pearl necklace, plastic bangles in white & pink, a cute vintage white basket purse and white wedges from Payless Shoes.

PhotoGrid_1398601914609Thursday was the first day of Viva and it was time to commence the famous spreadsheet of outfits planned. Since I had a photoshoot in the morning, I didn’t make it out until later in the afternoon to meet up with my husband by the pool wearing a custom playsuit by Inspired by Vintage Custom Clothing by Jackie with bakelite bracelets, a red hair flower by Vintage Box 1947, a vintage white basket purse and Red Dennise wedges by B.A.I.T.

Thursday Look #1

After soaking in some sun (with lots of sunscreen on), we headed into the Orleans to meet up with friends. I changed into my vintage Mexican circle skirt paired with the Fables by Barrie Scarlett Bustier, black bangles, a black dahlia hair flower from Vintage Box 1947 and black wedges from Payless Shoes.

Thursday Look #2

Every evening, we made a point of getting dolled up for dinner and my husband was a champ to coordinate with my outfits. I wore a vintage green strapless dress paired with vintage black beaded jewelry (borrowed from my friend Amber), vintage black lucite handbag, a skinny black belt to define the waist and strappy kitten heels. This was one of my favorite outfits of the week.

Thursday Look #3

Friday was quite a busy day. I opted to attend the Mitzi & Co Beauty Class while the hubby waited in line for Burlesque Show tickets. My first look was a vintage one shoulder floral dress paired with bakelite bracelets, a skinny brown belt, a yellow hair flower from Vintage Box 1947 (seeing as I love her stuff so much), my infamous white vintage basket purse and classic vintage cream wedges.

Friday Look #1

Since the weather was so beautiful, we took advantage of lots of time by the pool. It’s a good thing I purchased this fabulous vintage swimsuit just before Viva as I didn’t expect to need so many. Please excuse the terrible pose, we were on our way back in and I made the hubby snap a photo before it was too late. I paired various coloured bakelite bracelets to compliment the vintage two piece bikini along with my vintage white basket purse and vintage cream wedges.

Friday Look #2

Friday evening was one that I was looking forward to considerably since it was the first time I got to wear a piece of vintage history. I wore this stunning Alfred Shaheen dress paired with a petticoat, complimented by silver accessories (from my lovely friend Amber) and strappy silver kitten heels for comfort. Never in my wildest dreams did I think a 26″ waist dress would fit but thankfully to some incredible shapewear (I’ll tell you about that later), it fit beautifully.

Friday Look #3

The day we had all been waiting for…SATURDAY!!! Why? It was carshow day and the most popular event at Viva. I had been saving this particular dress for over a year in anticipation. I started the day early by getting my hair done by the incredibly talented Madison Jane and I could not be more thrilled with the look she created. The dress was a fabulous vintage yellow floral with 3D bustline, paired with a lovely vintage necklace, a flower mecca of Vintage Box 1947 roses, petticoat for fullness, a skinny white belt, my vintage white basket purse and comfortable white wedges. Never in my wildest dreams did I think so many strangers would ask to take my photo and even got interviewed by A Vintage Vanity for her Vlog! I’ll share that with you on my last Viva post.

Saturday Look #1

Since we spent the entire day at the carshow, changing into another outfit didn’t happen until evening. The hubby and I went for a delicious dinner at the Prime Rib Loft before the Burlesque competition. I wore a divine vintage lace dress, vintage beaded jewelry, vintage black lucite handbag and comfortable black sandals. At this point my feet were so swollen and sore, not many of my shoes fit.

Saturday Look #2

Easter Sunday was the perfect day to wear my custom peacock dress! I paired it with a mix of various coloured bracelets, vintage basket purse I purchased at the car show (it’s actually a sewing box) and Red Dennise wedges from B.A.I.T.

Sunday Look #1

It wasn’t long before we made our way to the Sunday Pool Party, time to kick back and relax! I wore a vintage black swimsuit paired with incredible glitter orchids, bakelite bracelets, vintage basket purse and Lucky Lou Wedges I purchased at the car show. It is so unfortunate that they do not make swimwear like they used to. The quality, detail and fit is impeccable.

Sunday Look #2

After spending the day by the pool, we took some solace indoors before going for dinner. I changed into this delightful vintage floral circle skirt paired with the Fables by Barrie Scarlett Bustier in rose, vintage pearl necklace, a hair flower by Vintage Box 1947, my infamous vintage white basket purse and comfy white wedges.

Sunday Look #3

After dinner it was time to throw on one more evening look before Viva was officially coming to a close. Although all my outfits were 1950s, it was time to go a little 60s glam. I wore a vintage gold lurex dress, complimented with a gold confetti clamper bracelet & matching lucite handbag and gold pumps.

Sunday Look #4

Last but not least, a post Viva outfit from our dinner Monday evening followed by a visit to the Louboutin Store. The Queen of Heartz Rust Ruca Dress feels like it was made for me! I accessorized it with my vintage black lucite handbag and comfy black sandals.

Post Viva Outfit

A huge thank you to all who followed along on Instagram and Facebook! Viva was such an incredible weekend and I am so delighted to share it with all of you. It was such a incredible week of breathtaking fashions and loved every minute of it.

Stay tuned for Part Four – Viva 17 Recap…
